It’s not just something that affects a small number of delegates, but an issue that every single person will be affected by in their lifetime and for some, as an issue that is fundamentally about safety, can also really mean life or death. Dr Lucy Mercer-Mapstone at #PCOA23 outlined the key concepts behind diversity and inclusion and why it’s a critical issue in the events planning space. Event organizers must create content and experiences that resonate with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Some Solutions: 🔸 Incorporate Local Culture: Infuse elements of local traditions and culture into your event to make it more relatable and memorable for attendees. 🔸 Variety of Activities: Offer a range of activities and sessions to cater to different interests and preferences, ensuring there's something for everyone. 🔸 Foster Interaction: Encourage interaction and networking among attendees to build a sense of community and connection. This month has seen some incredible events at Version 1 by our regional DIB Teams. A special shoutout to the following (just to name a few) for all their hard work in organising Eunjung Shin, Misbah Ahmed, Pallavi Kanajar and Fernanda Valeiro Soares 🎉 From celebrating International Tea Day in Newcastle, to a dialogue about Women in Tech in India, to a panel discussion on Cultural Dialogue in Birmingham, and even massages in Belfast - it really has been all go 💫 But the thing is, Belonging is the output of employee experience. You can't have a sense of belonging without a positive employee experience - something we always must remember. So, whilst these events are great to drive engagement and ensure that learning leads to more inclusive practices, the work we do in the background is never more important 💯 Looking at our policies, our offerings of support, how we can ensure our platforms are accessible, and building and reframing our processes to ensure inclusion is at the core, could not be more important 🙌 So, for all the DEI professionals out there, your work in the background may not be seen, but when you are able to empower your colleagues to have great events and you hear from colleagues on the difference those small incremental changes have made, you know you are doing the right things 🤝 “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” — Robert Louis Stevenson

💡Diversity and Inclusion💡 There are many reasons why diversity and inclusion are important considerations when planning a conference or event and here are some of the most important as I see them :- Richer Perspectives Diversity brings with it a variety of perspectives, experiences, and ideas, enriching the overall creative process Broader Audience Appeal Events that embrace diversity appeal to a wider audience, increasing attendance and engagement from different demographic groups Reflecting Global Realities Events that reflect diverse backgrounds and cultures mirror the global nature of society, making them more relevant and relatable to a wide range of attendees Inclusive Atmosphere Attendees are more likely to feel welcome and included when they see diversity represented, fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere at events Market Responsiveness Understanding diverse preferences and needs allows event organizers to tailor experiences that better align with the market, leading to increased satisfaction and loyalty Reputation Embracing diversity aligns with ethical standards, legal requirements, and social expectations, contributing to a positive reputation for both the event and its organisers I can think of at least another 5 but these are top of my list.
