Good to see progress on this issue. Despite the UK frequently being held as an example of good practice when it comes to ownership transparency, the Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies remain a major outlier. #UBO #beneficialownership

The Council has approved the 14th sanction package against Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine, adding 69 individuals and 47 entities to the list of those facing restrictive measures. The package includes amendments such as prohibiting EU road transport by entities 25% or more owned by Russians, addressing the trade of unlawfully removed Ukrainian cultural property, and imposing restrictions on intellectual property applications by Russians and financial transaction bans. Additionally, it introduces new sectoral bans, exemptions, and export restrictions to enhance enforcement and security. Decision (CFSP) 2024/1744 introduces a sectoral ban prohibiting access to Member States’ ports and locks as well as a broad range of services related to maritime transport for vessels which contribute to Russia’s ability to wage war against Ukraine. Vessels subject to the restrictive measures are listed in Annex XVI. It additionally clarifies the scope of the port access ban for Russian-flagged vessels and adds a derogation. I found this to be an amazing discussion. What is not being understood by so many is that the States have their own power. Our Federal Government exists because all 51 States agreed to have a contract of one authority on Federal issues. So, what happens when the current administration decides it has ultimate authority over states rights and you end up with a Constitutional Crisis. Here is why this is so concerning because it lead up to the start of the American Civil War in 1861. Our Constitution framed out 3 branches of the Federal government each independent against the other. Their aim and goal was to do what was best for the country not for an administration or political party. Our Founding Fathers saw this in other governments and wanted something different in crafting ours. Yes, our Constitution is a piece of paper to some, but to others it is a flow of ideas to not make a perfect government or society, but one that is for the people and by the people. It was never intended to have the rich or most popular make decisions for everyone in the country. Which is why discussion like this are so important. The moment we stop having these discussions is the moment when we start punching each other.
