The conflict in how we see the purpose of higher education can impede conversations and collaborations, and I put forth a few suggestions on how to bridge this gap. You can do this by integrating research and scholarship activities and skills into your curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment. You can also create opportunities for your students to showcase their research and scholarship projects and products, such as posters, papers, presentations, or exhibitions. Partner with academic consulting services, encourage student research programs, offer research and teaching assistantships, include other disciplines and update libraries and databases. Identify your passions and find them in the university landscape. Looking for connections between what might seem completely different areas of interest, and topics that fall outside what you might think of as academic will help you find yourself on the research map. Explore college, department, and faculty webpages: Research is happening all across the university, both on the Logan campus and across the state at our regional campuses and extension offices. Talk to your professors, graduate student instructors, and academic advisers Attend a Research Office orientation on How to Get Started in Research, or make an appointment with us to meet one-on-one.

It's hard to get a clear sense of how the current climate has affected professors' sense of academic freedom but Ithaka S+R tried. Their response rate is low BUT AAC&U says its own more representative, forthcoming survey echoes the findings here. Caveats for this particular study: CERTAIN topics seem more chilled than others, and nonwhite and noncisgender respondents show elevated levels of concern. We're following these issues/findings.

Great article on academic teaching and post-92 universities: ‘What is less well known is that this intense fight for “places” also takes place amongst university lecturers. If anyone thinks all the brilliant academics are at Russell-Group institutions and that everyone who teaches at a post-92 is an also-ran, they are very much misinformed. Academics are not lined up in order, ranked from best to worst — either in terms of research productivity, teaching skills or any other measure — with jobs allocated accordingly. The system is far more capricious. Wherever your child goes to university, they can expect to be taught by many lecturers who are incredibly inspiring and a few who are rather dull. Although there is probably a greater preponderance of research “stars” in the Russell Group, look closely enough and you will definitely find some, sparkling brightly, in the post-92s.’

In academia, obtaining a Ph.D. has long been seen as a demanding journey requiring years of dedication and academic prowess. However, a recent trend challenges this perception: the emergence of third-party facilitators offering streamlined solutions for obtaining a Ph.D. These entities, often masquerading as academic consultancy firms or educational service providers, promise to simplify the process by offering services ranging from dissertation writing assistance to complete thesis packages. For a fee, individuals can ostensibly bypass the traditional hurdles of doctoral education, achieving a Ph.D. with minimal effort. While these services may initially seem appealing, they raise significant ethical and academic integrity concerns. By commercializing the Ph.D. process, these entities undermine the core principles of scholarly inquiry and intellectual rigor. Moreover, their widespread availability risks devaluing the legitimacy of doctoral degrees, eroding public trust in higher education. Additionally, reliance on third-party facilitators exacerbates existing inequalities within academia. While accessible to some, these services pose additional barriers for individuals from underprivileged backgrounds, perpetuating socioeconomic divides and limiting opportunities for upward mobility. Furthermore, outsourcing academic work to third-party entities raises concerns about academic integrity and plagiarism. The lack of transparency surrounding the origin and authenticity of such work undermines the credibility of academic research and scholarship, diminishing the value of academic credentials obtained through these means. To address these challenges, universities and accrediting bodies must uphold academic standards and integrity. Clear policies should be established to deter students from engaging with third-party facilitators and hold accountable those who attempt to circumvent the academic process.
