SEEKING SUCCESS - PART 3 Having read countless K-12 school district mission statements it is clear that most are cumbersome expressions of academic excellence which are often combined with an expectation for exceptional teaching effort. Rarely do they challenge the entire workforce to become mission focused. They do not enable everyone to see their role in setting the stage for student learning. Most of the time people cannot accurately repeat their district’s mission statement or speak to its day-to-day relevance. At the risk of being presumptive, I believe the mission of every K-12 school district can be stated in one sentence. “Each day we will create the right conditions for learning.” Every employee has a role to play in accomplishing this. The leadership team, Board, and community have the collective responsibility to determine their definition of “right” in relation to creating the conditions for their students to learn.

There is a growing recognition that education systems need to nurture their greatest resource, their educators. Schools have understandably put the focus on students, their learning and well being. It's time to balance the perspective. If we are to attract and retain highly skilled and empathic teachers we have to invest in their wellbeing, both professional and personal. Professional Coaching for teachers should not be a band aid used to 'fix' an issue or perceived inadequacy but rather a gift of time for structured reflection. Reflection that can lead to clarity of purpose, recognition of personal potential, reduced stress and an ability to move forward. There are a plethora of excellent workshops aimed at improving a teachers ability to better serve their students and motivational speakers determined to ignite enthusiasm. Let's add the gift of Coaching to the teacher's toolkit thus respecting and supporting them to shape the future. They are a school's greatest asset. #teachers #ICF #Coaching #peercoaching #stress

Inspired as always by Leorra Crudas Confederation of School Trusts at the recent South West Trust Leaders meeting at Taunton Racecourse I’ve listened to Alex Hill’s Centennials book. A brilliant listen/read about how businesses and organisations can stand the test of time. The core concept of long standing institutions having a stable core but disruptive edge enables them to withstand the constant changes around them while still growing and innovating. They develop the future leaders from within while looking outwards for inspiration. How our embryonic Trust sector has so much to learn from these mighty institutions. Education is our core purpose meaning we must never lose our focus on the development of curriculum, assessment and pedagogy as the triumvirate for guaranteeing success and life chances for our young people. Trusts that are the driving force in quality curriculum development, while restless in their pursuit of excellence in the classroom and achieving the best for every pupil, will be the new centennials.
