Senior Partner - Global Legal Practice Head | Head of In-House Attorney Search (US) at Page Executive

Let’s talk about 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀. I often speak with candidates at the mid to senior level who are very particular about job titles. Some will say they’ll only move for a Director, Managing Director, SVP banding. Others will say they’ll only move for a General Counsel, Deputy or Head of Function role. Others at the more junior and mid-level will see a role titled Senior Counsel or Assistant General Counsel and hesitate to apply due to a misconception that they don’t have enough experience, simply based on the title. 💡 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚’𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜, an In-house legal department’s organizational hierarchy will vary from company to company, which means titles will be different at Company A and Company B. The caveat is that the Senior Counsel at Company A is working in the same role with the same responsibilities as the Deputy General Counsel at Company B. The Legal Counsel at Company A is doing the same work as the Associate General Counsel at Company B. Earth shattering revelation, I know. 🤯 🤯 🤯 Having been recruiting for in-house counsel for the past decade, I can assure you that if I’m reaching out to you about a particular role, it’s for a reason. The job description, org chart, structure, company, culture, people, compensation and benefits far outweigh the title in the long run. Job titles within the #inhouselegal market are nuanced. 📚 Don’t judge a book by the cover, and don’t judge a role by the title – you will be sure to miss out on some great opportunities if you base your interest solely on a job title. I think education has a lot to do with it. If you don’t have the right degree from the right college in our industry then a lot of companies will never know you exist, let alone what your capable of. Having the right title helps folks like me who don’t have JDs get the jobs we’re actually qualified for. It’s also important to note that AI doesn’t understand nuance. So these algorithms aren’t giving resumes the objective review they deserve.

I don't care what you call me. I'm interested in the right fit, a great culture, and an environment that prioritizes continuous learning and growth. Also, let's not forget the $$. LA is expensive.

Agree. Plus from the flip side, when you’re recruiting the job title is much less important in assessing a candidate’s capabilities than the responsibilities of the role, where they sit in the hierarchy etc.
