Data from 2023 showed that over a 7 month period, more than 4,500 referrals were made to the NHS for specialist support to former service personnel, reservists, and service leavers with mental wellbeing issues. During an NHS England survey, it was detailed that out of 3,000 veterans and service personnel that around 60% said they found it difficult to ask for help with issues surrounding their mental health. There are roughly 2.4 Million veterans living in the UK, and over 67 Million UK residents, you are not alone. Please remember there is always someone there to talk to. Over the next few weeks, we’ll highlight some impactful ways Rapid Response Care has made a difference for individuals in crisis. Imagine Rapid Response as mental health's equivalent to 911—an immediate and responsive solution available day or night, working collaboratively with law enforcement and paramedics when urgent assistance is needed. First, let’s meet *Xavier: One afternoon in 2023, Xavier was behaving erratically and unable to communicate from a reality base. The Police Department, Fire Department, and Xavier's family were on scene. The Chief of Police called our Rapid Response Director to help. Our team quickly assessed the situation and decided to “divide and conquer.” One Radiant Health Expert connected with Xavier and helped him de-escalate. At the same time, another Radiant Health Expert gathered information from family members. This allowed first responders to leave the scene and get back to their duties. Xavier decided to leave the scene peacefully with our team members. They decided not to receive care that day, but our team diligently followed up over the next few days. Xavier is receiving ongoing care at Radiant Health. *name has been changed to protect the identity of the client. I've spoken before about the 'hidden rigour' in the VCSE community. With a privileged vantage point of speaking to grassroots services in #perinatalmentalhealth regularly, it's obvious to me that the discreet professionalism can sometimes be to our detriment. Our modesty may well be under-serving the sophistication of the offer. There is an intentional subtlety to the hidden rigour that underpins our warm, trusted spaces. Vulnerable families need to feel safe and supported, without being overtly privy to the complex safeguarding protocols and pathways, the mutual referral relationships and the way we are embedded in the clinical network to mitigate risk. There appears to be a perception gap when it comes to the third sector. It's imbued with passion and goodwill and it's entrepreneurial by virtue of being founded by people who have mostly experienced a gaping hole in support and done something to change this for other families. Sure, there is learning for us all. There's ways to instil greater depth in data and evaluation to build the case. There's also the day-to-day reality of delivering vital services, often with no promise of where future funding might come from. While there are some longer funding cycles, others are prescriptive and short-term, which leaves essential grassroots services living hand-to-mouth. A vulnerable sector cannot sustainably support vulnerable families. Goodwill and passion are intrinsic. But so is the capacity to respect the value of the VCSE and its integral role in the system rather than a 'nice to have'. The reality is that we're not superfluous or an added extra. We're meeting an ever-increasing cohort of the population, due to massive pressure across the health landscape and prescriptive thresholds. We're holding complexity and that can be challenging with limited resources. Maybe it's time we let go of the modesty and the discretion and we talk openly and honestly about the reality of what it's like on the ground. Not in a combative way. Not to chastise or criticise others. But simply to be seen and heard. #VCSE #perinatalmentalhealth #thirdsector #charity
