Micro-advocacy: what is it? I recently learned about this concept (thank you @LeanIn), and I loved it because it is 1) small and practical 2) these small things are largely impactful and 3) we can all contribute in the way that fits us best. 💜 Micro-advocacy is all about taking small, everyday actions to support causes that you believe in while making a big impact. You don't need a large platform or massive resources to be an advocate—your voice, your actions, and your contributions matter. Here’s how you can practice micro-advocacy this week: 1) Pick a cause that you believe in. 2) Pick one of the strategies below to make your contribution: ⚪ Raise awareness about the issue: Share information about causes you care about on your social media. ⚪ Support local organizations/associations that are affiliated with your issue: Pick a local organization and/or event to attend. Find a micro-volunteering opportunity to contribute that fits in with your other priorities (even a few hours can make a big difference!). ⚪ Talk about the issue: Talk to friends, family, and colleagues about things that you care about. Conversations can lead to changes in perspectives and can inspire others to take action, too. ⚪ Amplify others' voices: Use your platform to highlight voices from underrepresented communities (be an ally!) ⚪ Advocate for change at work: Lead the way on establishing or expanding inclusive practices and policies at work. It was incredibly heartening to be part of the Changing Lives and Agenda Alliance Transforming Together network meeting today. Well. First things first. It was distressing to learn the extent to which North East women have been disproportionately affected by the triple whammy of austerity + covid + the cost of living crisis and its knock-on impact on women's services, leading to: - 76% of women in need of domestic abuse support in Northumberland and Tyne and Wear missing out on these services - a mortality rate 1.7 times higher than for England and Wales as a whole These are hugely sobering numbers. But what was heartening was the will to proactivity and compassion spearheaded by the incredible Laura McIntyre together with Nia Clark, drawing together a deeply committed pool of North East professionals working to improve outcomes for women with the most complex needs, who often fall through the cracks of society's safety net, experiencing repeat victimisation and trauma, in part due to the gendered stigma surrounding those who do not conform to our stereotypes of the "deserving" female victim. If you ever look on the state of the world and feel like you want to turn away because it's all too awful, know that there are kind, compassionate, committed people, keen to come together, work out how services can collaborate better and proactively overcome the barriers to engaging those at the very sharp end of life. Burnie Works exists to help the Burnie community make changes that improve lives. We do this by walking alongside community, ensuring every voice, no matter how quiet, is valued and heard in our mission to bring about positive change. We know that when we build the knowledge, skills, and experience of the people in Burnie, we strengthen our ability to drive positive change together. To help do this, we have designed a program to deliver Community Capability Building workshops for our community – get ready for an incredible twelve months of community empowerment in Burnie! The program consists of several workshops. Each is aimed at building people’s knowledge, skills and abilities. The program includes topics such as diversity and inclusion, community leadership, understanding generations, advocacy, power dynamics, and local data; how to collect it, how to use it, and why. These topics have been carefully selected based on our experience, conversations with community, and valuable feedback from past workshop participants. We have also chosen topics that align with our organisational goals and values. Burnie Works Chair Jacqueline de Jonge said, “We are incredibly grateful that our community has received funding for such an important program. When we learn together, we can apply what we’ve learned together. We can move forward with a shared aspiration and plan for change.” The Burnie Works team is eager to connect with new and familiar faces and is excited about the opportunity to learn and grow together to create positive change.
