New article with Cathy A. R. Brant out now--available online and in print soon. Before Stonewall: Early LGBTQ+ Activism in Philadelphia, in Social Studies and the Young Learner. In this article, we present two curated text sets, each featuring a primary source analysis activity to engage upper elementary students in an examination of LGTBQ+ activism in Philadelphia between 1965 and 1969 as part of a larger unit on civil rights activism in the United States. Through engagement with the text sets shared in this article, students are encouraged to build understanding of LGBTQ+ history and make connections between organizers’ efforts and the work of Black civil rights advocates who inspired LGBTQ+ activists. Thus, teachers and students can learn not only about LGBTQ+ people and Black civil rights activists, but also directly from them through primary and secondary sources.

On #Juneteenth (June 19), a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, we are reminded that the work of equality, justice, freedom, inclusion, and belonging never stop. Black Queer people, who for too long have been historically overlooked and marginalized, have always played an integral role in fighting for and shaping the LGBTQ+ community. And they have done it in the face of adversities that other people have not, do not, and will not face. To this day, they continue to face unique challenges in and out of the workplace because of their intersecting identities. We must always remember that the LGBTQ+ community is not a monolith. The success of our larger movement requires gaining a better understanding of, and investing in solutions that mitigate or eradicate, these unique challenges. It requires that we raise up the voices who have done so much in the fight for equality. It requires we lead with inclusion and belonging. Be an ally. Be Kind. We ALL have one thing in common, we are all human beings first. Yet, so many different people continue to experience discrimination for a multitude of reasons. Financial wellness in the LBGTQ+ community face unique challenges and setbacks-- we all deserve to have access to financial products and services in an equitable environment. The 2024 LGBTQ+ Financial Wellness Report's key findings are a rude awakening that there is much work to be done for better financial inclusion. *Roughly half (48.15) of LGBTQ+ adults say they are financially unwell, compared to one-quarter (25.7%) of the general public. Both BIPOC and younger (age 18-24) LGBTQ+ adults are even more likely to say they are financially unwell. *Three in ten (30.8%) LGBTQ+ adults say they have experienced discrimination while accessing financial services *Roughly half (48.15) of LGBTQ+ adults say they are financially unwell, compared to one-quarter (25.7%) of the general public. *Nearly 60% (59.7%) of LGTBQ+ adults have annual household incomes below $75,000. "The data underscore the need for our economic empowerment programs, especially for younger BIPOC LGBTQ+ folks. I hope the data are a call to action for organizations serving our community. 🎇 Reflecting on Independence Day 🎇 For the Fourth of July holiday, it's essential to celebrate the values of freedom and independence that this day represents. However, it's also crucial to acknowledge that true freedom and justice have not been and are not always accessible to everyone in this country throughout our history. For many marginalized communities, the Fourth of July can evoke mixed emotions. It's a time to reflect on the progress we've made towards equality and recognize the work that still needs to be done. As we gather with loved ones and enjoy the festivities, let's also remember: - Indigenous communities who have lived on this land for centuries before the Declaration of Independence was signed. - Black Americans who fought for freedom and continue to fight against systemic racism. - Immigrants who contribute to our nation's diversity and strength. - LGBTQ+ individuals who have fought for and continue to fight for equal rights. - People with disabilities who advocate for accessibility and inclusion. Let's use this day as an opportunity to educate ourselves and others, to amplify marginalized voices, and to commit to creating a more just and equitable society for all. How do professional networks center diversity, equity, and #Inclusion so members feel like they belong and are supported? Lee Ann Huang and colleagues conducted a study on DEI impact in the Doris Duke Fellowships, a program for #ChildWellbeing scholars: https://lnkd.in/gvjUhUDW Findings: - Fellows felt high levels of inclusion, belonging and support. - Those levels were slightly lower for scholars of color, scholars with disabilities, and LGBTQ scholars.
