We learn everyday RSPB This ones the American Subspecies The osprey is unusual in that it is a sole living species that occurs nearly worldwide. Even the few subspecies are not unequivocally separable. There are four generally recognised subspecies, although differences are small, and ITIS lists only the first three.

One number for the #WorldOceanDay that's in my head: 0,001%. This is the approximate % of the deep seafloor that has been visually observed in the world up to date. This number comes from some of the amazing work presented at the DOOS annual meeting, specifically work done at the Ocean Discovery League (@oceandiscoveryleague). And if you are surprised just like me, you can look up existing literature on the topic, for example, this position paper from the European Marine Board IVZW (published in 2015, but highly relevant today; check page 15 if you are curious about the numbers and %s): https://lnkd.in/duZEc8M5 Numbers are only a partial component of human knowledge and existence. So, for this World Ocean Day, I share Bob Randall's voice. His story about the Land teaches much more about the Ocean than any number can: https://lnkd.in/d5xudDHJ

Robinson Crusoe's first steps towards Colonialization: To overcome his fear, the first project is to construct the 'Wall' that keeps him safe. Then, Crusoe gradually spends years to set up a series of enclosures, for cattle and goats and for plantations, which slowly cover the landscape, the island. Crusoe's enclosure gives him a sort of relief and meaning to life because in his enclosed spaces he gains identity and individuality. Therefore, one can claim that Crusoe's enclosure movement is a movement towards identity formation. This enclosing process makes everything inside, and it is his first step towards colonizing the island.

Swordtail fish have amazing sword ornaments to entice female during courtship. But some species have lost their eponymous sword, and this has not just happened once but twice during evolutionary diversification. Check out the details in this new paper led by Gabriel Preising. https://lnkd.in/gdQ5yPkk

Most of this article is behind a paywall, but the point is clear in the opening paragraphs. Past colonial approaches have stamped out the "suspicions" inherent in local traditions and religions, in favour of more "Enlightened" thinking. Examples abound of how such approaches have led to environmental destruction. First Nations beliefs, whether expressed in terms of spirits who protect/guard areas of land or in terms of a primordial obligation to care for the land which gave us birth and sustains us, can show us what we need to do to ensure the planet is habitable and beautiful for those who come after us. Part of that is to recognise that we are one of many species, and not the most important. https://lnkd.in/gDcZthms
