This number comes from some of the amazing work presented at the DOOS annual meeting, specifically work done at the Ocean Discovery League (@oceandiscoveryleague). Robinson Crusoe's first steps towards Colonialization: To overcome his fear, the first project is to construct the 'Wall' that keeps him safe. Then, Crusoe gradually spends years to set up a series of enclosures, for cattle and goats and for plantations, which slowly cover the landscape, the island. Crusoe's enclosure gives him a sort of relief and meaning to life because in his enclosed spaces he gains identity and individuality. Therefore, one can claim that Crusoe's enclosure movement is a movement towards identity formation. This enclosing process makes everything inside, and it is his first step towards colonizing the island.

Most of this article is behind a paywall, but the point is clear in the opening paragraphs. Past colonial approaches have stamped out the "suspicions" inherent in local traditions and religions, in favour of more "Enlightened" thinking. Examples abound of how such approaches have led to environmental destruction. First Nations beliefs, whether expressed in terms of spirits who protect/guard areas of land or in terms of a primordial obligation to care for the land which gave us birth and sustains us, can show us what we need to do to ensure the planet is habitable and beautiful for those who come after us.
