In Brazil, schooling is one of the biggest challenges for families that the J&F Institute has helped solve. Gabriel Rodrigues Da Cruz, a 19-year-old from Brazil, started school at the J&F Institute in 2016 at age 11. The J&F Institute gave Gabriel the opportunities he needed to provide a better life for his family through free education and the opportunity to build his career with JBS. Reflecting on College Life 💬 🍪 Butter Cookies & Lesson Learnt My last friday was another chapter in my ongoing journey as a Dairy Technology student, diving into the world of Food Technology. With the guidance of Subith Sir, 🙏🏻 Our class came together to create more than just butter cookies and cake – we crafted memories, skills, and perhaps a newfound appreciation for the science behind each delectable bite. As I shared a picture of the butter cookies my group and I made. Think of all the practical sessions that have left their mark on me – just as they might have on you. Whether it's the flour dusting our aprons or the strategic moves on a chessboard that is our career, each step is a learning opportunity. From the lab to the library, and now to the LinkedIn community, I see the threads of our experiences weaving a tapestry of continuous growth. 🌱 To all the students and professionals, let's cherish these moments of learning and take them forward into our careers. 🎉 Let's not forget the laughter amidst the precise measurements and the teamwork behind each successful event. Watch out! The yuletide and expired products Last week, I embarked on an internship supervision of students studying Environmental Health and Sanitation Education at the AKENTEN APPIAH-MENKA UNIVERSITY OF SKILLS TRAINING AND ENTREPRENEURIAL DEVELOPMENT(AAMUSTED_GH). Most of our students interned at the local district or municipal assemblies nationwide. As part of their routine monitoring, the students and their mentors uncovered some expired products sold on the local markets. The Environmental Health Units of the assemblies confiscated these items in the first instance. For me, two things were striking: (1) the fact that some consumers did not care that the products were expired and wished they were not confiscated at all, and (2) the fact that shopkeepers thought they should be allowed to sell the expired items as they had incurred costs to purchase them. As we climax the year, kindly be extra vigilant when buying products on the market. Check the product expiration dates before you make payment. Do not consume expired products. About last night! ❤️ 💛 🖤 I had the pleasure of speaking with allan mai of Acid League at the Food Science Club at the University of Guelph, where we both graduated from. After completing my Food Science undergraduate, I felt limited in my options post-graduation. The program seemed to funnel students into either research, quality assurance, or product development. I tried product development three separate times: 🧀 Aiding in research for plant-based cheese curds. 🫙 Making vinegar at Acid League 🍦 Developing ice cream for an ice cream subscription service. While each product development experience taught me invaluable knowledge, I knew instinctively it was not what lit my flame. I then felt trapped in my degree and was unsure of how to pivot. We chatted about our not-so-conventional routes to pivot in the industry. Our verdict? If you allow your curiosity to lead the way and authentically express yourself, you will invite natural opportunities into your life. The truth is, the world is a fascinating place. People are fascinating, and you have so much to learn from everyone you meet. If you are graduating and feeling lost (me at 21), go find companies/people you find interesting and learn as much as you can from them. Whether you gain some perspective, advice, a job, or a lesson, there is always something to learn. Here’s to keeping that child-like curiosity alive and well! 🥂

Welcome to Inside SCSD! Today we will meet our CHAIR of the IFT Sensory and Consumer Sciences Division - Alden Riak.   Alden is a Sensory Scientist at Synergy Flavors Inc. He works in three pillars of sensory: Descriptive Analysis: Training the panelists, Discrimination: Conducting studies like tetrads, and Degree of Difference Testing Consumer Testing: Liking Studies, net penalty analysis, and preference testing Background: He received his Bachelor's in Food Science from Iowa State University and his Masters in Food Science from Penn State University. Why did he join the SCSD?: He was working as an intern for Land O’Lakes in 2018 and the sensory manager talked highly about the group and offered him the contact information of a member. He reached out and asked if there was anything he could help with that summer and they offered him the opportunity to help set up a website for a silent auction for the summer social event! He was able to help for the next summer as well until he finally joined as a student representative in 2019. He always highly encourages students to get involved at any level! His passion for the sensory and consumer sciences field: It’s all about the people, to have a job that has him interacting with people from all over is amazing (He is not too well suited for solitary lab work Haha!). He also gets to see a fun array of projects to work on which one can use the wide assortment of methods in our sensory toolkit to complete! His favorite basic taste (sweet, salty, sour, bitter, umami)? He said, ‘Don’t make me choose between my two loves of sweet and salty!!! 🍭🧂That’s cruel! The last time I was asked, I had a tough time choosing between sweet and salty, so this time I’ll use the basic taste that I just discovered SWALTY (a combination of sweet and salty)! Keep an eye out for prestigious scientific literature like My Twitter! This is definitely not because I still can’t choose a favorite.’   If he could only eat/drink one food/beverage for the rest of her life, it would be deep-dish pizza! Half of the people in this world can't teach you something politely if you don't about it. They will slap you like "Oh! You don't know how to do it?" Obviously! That is the reason I am asking, right? How come a freshie will know everything? If this world starts answering freshie's doubts without making them feel small and unqualified. They can go a long long way out. First : It really takes a lot of courage to go and ask a doubt. Second : If the person in front behaves this way, the freshie becomes more scared and to be noted, it just not comes professionally. It stays with them as a emotional thing. They won't come to you the next time and will prefer doing the work in whatever knowledge they have. To all the working professionals out there, We are very curious and eager to work. We want to make the most of the opportunity that we have been given. But we need you to answer our questions so that we can understand fully and then work with at most accuracy.
