Despite their small size, cicadas emit one of the loudest sounds among insects. This study, published in JASA , shows that the cicadas' unique sound production system, including their tymbals and hollow abdomens, amplifies their calls in ways that linear models can't fully explain. This is a Multipurpose Hall suffering from echo leading to unsatisfied users.
