Over the past thirty years, vertical transportation has seen few instances of truly innovative breakthroughs that inspire a sense of wonder. Instead, advancements have mostly involved incorporating existing technologies into the elevator system without achieving the kind of transformative leap akin to the shift from analog film to digital media—something that would leave a lasting impression. The evolution of drive systems from geared to gearless, from fixed frequency to variable frequency, and from electromagnetic induction motors to permanent magnet motors, as well as the transition from mechanical relays to electronic PCBs and from machine room to machine room-less designs, has not brought about significant or revolutionary changes in elevator safety. What we often see are superficial modifications, such as the use of different materials for elevator exteriors or the addition of a few LED lights, which seem to satisfy some, but these changes often neglect practicality and safety. For instance, some companies have experimented with using carbon fiber for colored ropes, overlooking the fact that passengers primarily seek safety, comfort, and shorter traveling time ! Carbon fiber, inherently prone to wear, proved no more durable than current steel ropes covered in urethane, which also suffer from frequent issues. Installing flashy lights on escalators and walkways is not an innovative breakthrough but merely a new combination of existing ideas, and it often adds to the maintenance burden. The limited production of such designs leads to higher repair costs, which may not be sustainable for owners. If a company could confidently claim to have invented an elevator that would "never trap passengers," I would be the first to give them numerous likes.
