Safety first. It is as simple as that. Seafaring is a high-risk occupation. But that can never be an excuse to relax on safety issues. Instead, it should push us to always strive for safer ships and ways of working. Today is the International Day of the Seafarer. The International Maritime Organization has chosen to focus on safety at sea as the theme for 2024, and we wholeheartedly support this theme. Safety is the most crucial aspect of our work. We won't transport your goods if it means a too high risk for our colleagues at sea. At Grieg Star, we live by the motto, 'Work with safety to come home safely.' This saying, which has been ours for close to ten years, underscores the crucial role of our seafarers in making our industry safer. They are not just employees, but the very heart of our safety efforts. Therefore, our seafarers' safety tips are integral to our work. The importance of the role that seafarers play in global trade and the global economy cannot be overstated: they are at the very heart of shipping worldwide. As such, we join our subsidiary Marine Benefits in highlighting the International Maritime Organization's Day of the Seafarer 2024 and its focus on safety at sea for these crucial workers. Today is the International Maritime Organization's Day of the Seafarer. Celebrated annually on 25 June, Day of the Seafarer recognises the contribution seafarers make to international seaborne trade, the world economy, and our day-to-day lives. This year, we asked AMSA staff to show their appreciation for the work of seafarers and how their safety at sea is in the interest of all of us. Scott Cundy, who works in our Seafarer Certification team, started out crewing tall ships in Europe, and tourism and dive vessels in Israel and Seychelles. He has crossed the Atlantic 30 times and the Pacific 4 times — albeit under sail at an average speed of 5 knots. Scott says, "Seafarer safety is important, considering marine safety has more inherent elements of high risk than most professions.” "My best safety tip is to invest the time and effort in developing and maintaining a simple and effective safety management system (SMS). A good SMS will be simple to understand and easily implemented. I always ask myself: Does the SMS say what we do? And are we doing what the SMS tells us to do?" Day of the Seafarer! This year, the global theme focuses on safety at sea, honoring the selfless servants who transport over 90% of the world's goods and fuels on cargo ships and freighters. Did you know there are 1.89 million seafarers on 74,000 ships worldwide, hailing from diverse nationalities, cultures and creeds. Seafarers make immense sacrifices, spending up to nine months at sea, facing dangers like extreme weather, piracy, and isolation. In 2015 alone, there were 2,687 casualties at sea, underscoring the risks inherent in this essential occupation. Communication remains a challenge, with approximately two-thirds of ship crews lacking means of communication while at sea. Additionally, only 2% of seafarers are women, highlighting the need for greater gender diversity in the sector. Organizations like the Women's International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) play a crucial role in supporting women in maritime roles.
