Adversity hits every business, but the ability to be flexible is paramount. Hitender Punyane faced adversity head on when the Covid-19 pandemic hit SHN Enterprises hard. The leading manufacturer, wholesaler and importer of CNC Tool Station, Inspection Table, Industrial Trolley, Industrial Pallets and many such products – SHN Enterprises faced challenges of paying salaries, vendor payments, retaining his core team, among other problems. Associated with BYST for 11 years, Hitender reached out to his mentor who suggested a few key tweaks. Having adopted a fixed price policy before, SHN started offering discounts and also became open to negotiation on the price of new products. Covid-related products, such as foot-operated sanitiser dispenser and foot-operated handwash booth, became a central focus of his business. It's been a bit since I started FLUFFOFF with Kadambari Seth . We've officially started getting #customisation orders (we do this at an individual and corporate/team/bulk level), and we are extremely excited! Many people from the industry have advised us not to go ahead with individual customisations because of the way the #IndianConsumer is: 1. They will squeeze you for everything you're worth, and more. 2. The back and forth for each individual consumer is insane, to say the least. Yesterday we were fulfilling an individual customisation order, and man, was everyone right! The responses we received for this particular customised order were not professional at all, very rude and the expectation of immediate replies was very high. After fulfilling and processing the order, mum and I sat down at the end of the day (a very long one, might I add) and discussed whether we should even continue with these individual customisations. Here's what we concluded our discussion with: 1. You cannot stop customers from expecting the very best from every brand in the country - the #IndianLandscape has always come through and we must follow suit. 2. One okay-ish experience doesn't set you up for a lifetime of the same experience. 3. Don't stop what you're doing until you have enough evidence to tell you that you need to put a hold on things. There's a new container CHAAT business opened near my house. They're two partners. I went there recently to taste the food. Since it was just me at the store, I struck up a conversation with one of the partners present there. I told him, I liked the idea of starting something on your own. You didn't go for the job like the conventional way. Him: I never wanted to do a job. I always had to do a business. Me: How much investment did you make? Him: Rs 8 Lakhs. The investor is my father. Since I didn't have a land. I got myself a partner who had land. We're going to return the money to my father though. Me: How did the idea bloom? Him: I didn't know what I wanted to sell even when everything was being readied. I wanted to make something healthy available to the public. So, I did. Even though we're a CHAAT center, we don't sell items that are available on roadside strollers. We make everything healthy- right from the chutneys we use for our CHAAT. Key takeaways? 1) He had somebody to make the investment that too of Rs. 8 Lakhs. It's a huge investment with a risk. 2) Even though he got the funds handy unlike most entrepreneurs, he made good use of it. 3) Used the most loved foods and introduced something new with a twist. #entrepreneurs #businessmindset #businessideas
