Thank you ICAS - The Professional Body of CAs, Ryan Herman and Sarah Speirs for helping UK firms to prepare for the upcoming commercial risks associated with working with EU financial services clients. This month’s magazine includes my article on what UK firms need to do now.   Many firms are unaware that their EU clients are conducting thorough risk assessments for Information and Communication Technology, which include evaluating the risk exposure to and from other financial entities and critical or important functions.    This means that EU firms may contact their UK third parties to review their risk analysis and cyber controls. Based on this, the client will decide whether it can continue the business relationship without regulatory issues. This could be a make-or-break discussion, and the deadline is only seven months away.

"New European cybersecurity competence centre and network", interesting briefing published now in June 2024 by the European Parliament. 👇 This briefing summarizes the development and implementation of the European Union's #cybersecurity initiatives, beginning with the adoption of a #cybersecurity package by the European Commission on 13 September 2017. This package aimed to enhance European Union cyber-resilience and defense capabilities. In September 2018, the European Commission proposed establishing a European #cybersecurity competence centre and a #network of national coordination centres to strengthen European Union #cybersecurity infrastructure. This centre was designated to manage European Union funds for #cybersecurity research under the Digital Europe and Horizon Europe programs from 2021 to 2027. Following extensive negotiations and trilogue meetings, the legislation was enacted on 28 June 2021. RANSOMWARE: NEW RESEARCH, STRONGER POLICY FREE WEBINAR & PANEL DISCUSSION: 7 NOVEMBER #Ransomware is an escalating threat to global #cybersecurity and the national security of several countries. Just one week ago, the fourth annual summit of the multinational #CounterRansomwareInitiative (CRI) issued a statement on recent measures and results. In response, a select panel of policy specialists will review progress made at the summit in a webinar hosted by the #SocialCyberInstitute, based in Australia. The speakers will discuss strengths and shortcomings of this diplomatic effort. Closing down payment of ransoms by the victims of such attacks is one measure that is beginning to have some effect in a few countries, but it is far from the whole picture. The trends in these attacks and their consequences are not looking good. With cybercriminals becoming more sophisticated, it’s clear that a comprehensive, proactive approach is needed to strengthen defences across sectors. For example, leading law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, are stepping up their efforts. Unveiling the world's first 'Cybercrime Index' - a game-changer in assessing the true magnitude of cyber threats faced by different countries. After three years of extensive research, an international team of researchers has produced the inaugural "World Cybercrime Index," pinpointing the primary cybercrime hubs globally by ranking the most prominent sources of cybercrime on a national scale. According to the published Index in PLOS ONE, Russia poses the most significant cybercrime risk, followed by Ukraine, China, the U.S., Nigeria, and Romania. The UK ranks eighth. Dr Miranda Bruce, a co-author of the study from the University of Oxford and UNSW Canberra, emphasized that the findings will assist both public and private sectors in directing their efforts towards key cybercrime centres, reducing resources spent on countries with less severe cybercrime issues. This research aims to unveil cybercriminal identities and support the battle against profit-driven cybercrime.
