As we begin a new year, it's important to reflect on the past and set goals for the future. One of the things I do regularly is revisit Admiral McRaven's commencement speech for the University of Texas at Austin. In less than 20 minutes, he shares valuable lessons on perseverance and the power of small actions. Here are 10 takeaways from the speech that are worth remembering: 1. Make your bed 2. Find someone to help you paddle 3. Measure a person by the size of their heart, not by the size of their flippers 4. Get over being a "sugar cookie" and keep moving forward 5. Don't be afraid of the circuses 6. Slide down the obstacles headfirst 7. Don't back down from the sharks 8. Be your best in the darkest moments 9. Start singing when you're up to your neck in mud 10. Don't ever, ever ring the bell If you haven't heard the speech yet, I highly recommend giving it a listen. It's a powerful reminder that the small things matter and that we should never give up. #newyear #goalsetting #motivation

People like Ben Kessler (2006 Tommie of the Year and UST student commencement speaker) and Harrison Butker will always exist somewhere in the dark corners of society that we like to pretend don't exist. You've likely heard Butker's speech or at least the outcry from it. You likely haven't heard Kessler's speech... which can be found here - it is triggering, and you can audibly hear cursing from the audience, FYI. This is what Chrissi Johnson, Danielle Shaffer and so many of my friends had to endure at their own graduation, the year before mine. Devastation. https://lnkd.in/g6c7Aacr For every clown out there using the podium to rewind history back to the 1950's, there are folks more qualified and competent delivering hope from the podium like role models and friends Jim Obergefell and Sara Cunningham. You likely heard the speech in 2014 at The University of Texas at Austin by Admiral McRaven. Perhaps one of the most epic speeches ever given from an authority figure with integrity, conviction, hope, and inspiration. https://lnkd.in/g6c7Aacr I had the opportunity a few weeks ago to return to the University of St. Thomas and deliver my own commencement address at the graduating class of 2024's Lavender Graduation ceremony. Whoopi Goldberg, I agree with your take. We all have a voice, and we all need to use our voices to advocate for our beliefs. The way to fight fire sometimes is by using fire of our own. Rather than hate, we deliver acceptance. Rather than vitriol, we deliver hope. Rather than intolerance, we deliver a celebration of diversity. Rather than dwelling on the past, we look to the future. I attempted to do this in my own way. You can hear those comments here: https://lnkd.in/ga7pnN8e

My point is, we're embarrassed about things we should be proud of and proud of things we should be embarrassed about. Must watch for every student graduating from a university and joining the real world to build a career. https://lnkd.in/dZB8vNA2 Jerry Seinfeld delivers a humorous and thought-provoking commencement address at Duke University, emphasizing the importance of humour, hard work, paying attention, and falling in love. He encourages graduates to find fascination, not just passion, and to enjoy the small things in life. Seinfeld also advises against taking oneself too seriously and urges graduates to maintain their sense of humour throughout life. The three keys to life according to Seinfeld: bust your ass, pay attention, and fall in love. Effort always yields a positive value. Even if the outcome of the effort is absolute failure of the desired result. This is a rule of life. Find something where you love the good parts and don't mind the bad parts too much. The torture you're comfortable with. The less secure and confident you feel in the direction, the more surprises and excitement you will have in store. New video out! This one might be controversial. There is an overwhelmingly large amount of information and education available online for free. Meanwhile college becomes more expensive every year. The value of higher education has never been more questionable. Still, I try my best to explain how to get into a top 10 school in this video. If you know anyone in highschool with ambition… Or even if you know someone who’s debating if they even want to go to college… Share this video with them, they’ll get something out of it: https://lnkd.in/gYTGWQ3N WHAT DO YOU THINK?! Is college worth it?

Age is only a number.
Yesterday, at the age of 105, Virginia “Ginger” Hislop graduated from Stanford University Graduate School of Education with her master’s degree. When she started on campus in 1936, her plan was to get her bachelor’s of education, which she did in 1940, and obtain her master’s of education so she could teach, which she started directly after. However, just after completing her coursework and before turning in her final thesis, her then-boyfriend George Hislop, ’41, a GSE student in Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC), got called in to serve during World War II, prompting the pair to get married and Virginia Hislop to leave campus before graduating. Now – 83 years after leaving campus and living in service to learning – Virginia Hislop returned to Stanford to finish what she started and receive her graduate degree. When she rose from her seat at the ceremony, donned in cap and gown, to walk across the stage and receive her master’s hood, the applause roared. She was handed her diploma and smiled for the cameras. Her grandkids waved and cheered. “My goodness,” she said. “I’ve waited a long time for this.” 🗞️: https://lnkd.in/g_zMm3kb 📸: Charles Russo
