20/05/2024 - In the Ramjas College Annual Prize Distribution Event, I got a series of nostalgia rushing in my head when I received a memento for my contribution in the National Service Scheme, Ramjas College over the past 2 years. So, as usual I thought about sharing it. Reflecting on my journey with the National Service Scheme, over the past three years, I’ve realized that the negative perceptions surrounding college #societies are often misguided. Yes, there are challenges. Toxic? No. Political? Absolutely. Throughout my tenure I encountered a diverse array of individuals. Some were genuinely committed to service, while others were less scrupulous and ingenuine, particularly when it came to authority and power. I saw people volunteering their time and money selflessly, as well as those who tried to shirk responsibilities. The reality is that, like any workplace, a college society is a melting pot of personalities, minds, and hearts. You’ll encounter favoritism, bias, ignorance, and underappreciation. You would want to speak against the unethical activities but you will be asked to keep shut because you don't have that authority. You may not like everyone you work with, but you’ll also meet incredible people. During this journey, I made amazing friends and met talented seniors. I’ve had my share of complaints and conflicts with council members and juniors. Looking back, there are things I wish I had said or done differently. But every experience contributed to what I am today. My advice? You don’t need to join a college society to have a significant college life. However, if you do, choose your people, your circle, and use your power (if you hold it) wisely. Engage, learn, and grow. #College #Societies #NSS #Rotaract #StudentLife #PersonalGrowth #Networking

#UniversityInsights Choosing a college is such a personal experience. Every student should research in-depth every school they are considering to apply to." - Samhita Gopal Rao, Admissions Counselor, Texas Christian University (TCU). Had an insightful in-person meeting with Samhita, who is not only beamed with boundless energy (even after a full day of engaging school fair!), but also incredibly knowledgeable. She provided a comprehensive overview of what counselors like me need to know about TCU. From our chats, I discovered some fascinating facts—TCU is ranked #1 for Happiest Students! Their Center for Career and Professional Development plays a vital role in preparing students for life after college, and it’s a connection for life, supporting alumni through career transitions as well. We also discussed the Texas Christian University - M.J. Neeley School of Business, known for its hands-on, personalized, and globally recognized approach, which truly sets TCU apart. I’m excited about the possibilities and look forward to more such collaborations with Samhita and Texas Christian University in the future. Stay tuned to this space for more insights from my meetings with university representatives and valuable information about different universities. Interesting read and some very good points. There is a high need for more practical career advising in higher education institutions. Graduates need skills to be prepared for the workforce, not just head knowledge on a certain topic.
Love that our LSU Olinde Career Center team gets to be the driver of this work at Louisiana State University. It helps to have buy in from great faculty and staff partners across the campus. https://lnkd.in/gj_6KQJm

"My formal education at Bethlehem College didn't give me a skillset in marketing; it gave me something that's of far more value: it equipped me to live as a Christian in a broken world. My faith was deepened and grounded in God's Word. My faith became my own, and I saw spiritual realities for myself. I chose Bethlehem knowing it probably wouldn't open up a lucrative career for me. I chose it because I believed that the spiritual realities and challenges I would face in life were more important to prepare for than a career." Bennett Williamson, B.A. '19 Learn more about how a Bethlehem College and Seminary education can equip you to live as a mature Christian in a broken world at bcsmn.edu.

There's no better student to feature during March Madness than Damari! As a basketball superfan, it's only fitting that we tell you about him and his experience with Minds Matter SoCal's Mock College Fair. At Minds Matter SoCal, we're revolutionizing college exploration. Unlike traditional college fairs, where school representatives engage with students, our approach is unique. Our students, like Damari, take the lead. They delve into researching a college or university, then create and present their findings to their peers. Damari's exploration of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was more than an assignment; it ignited a journey of self-discovery, aspirations, and resilience. “The mock fair process was certainly a process. We spent hours preparing and learning about the college we were working on. I researched the school's values and what they stood for as a school. Then, I would research their application process, what they needed to be a good candidate, and how many different types of students attended that school. And since I love basketball, I did research on that as well, learning about the different rivalries they had and what traditions they had on game days. I enjoyed learning about the students' passion for their school, and UNC also reciprocated that because they have so many different opportunities for low-income students to attend and get the financial help they need. If I had the chance to attend, I would.” Our Mock College Fair is a testament to the power of student-led inquiry and the joy of shared growth. Damari's experience underscores our commitment to nurturing a community where every student is supported and celebrated for their unique journey—toward college and beyond. We are inspired by Damari and all our students as they unlock the doors to their futures with support from the Minds Matter SoCal family. Here, we're not just imagining a new future; we're actively building it together every day. To support more students like Damari, we need committed volunteers ready to make a lasting impact on a student's life. I had the honor of attending Career Day at my daughter’s high school and my alma mater, Resurrection College Prep High School! The question most asked was “what did you major in?” - which makes sense as many of them are off to college soon. I tried to show through my career (um, police officer to marketer) that most careers are not linear - much more of a squiggly line. And that your major doesn’t define your future, you do! What is your advice for high school seniors as they approach graduation and college? #careerday #careers #marketing #advice

Is it worthwhile to be a part of college clubs and societies? 🤔 In college, there are two types of people: those who steer clear of clubs and those whose entire college experience revolves around them. Being part of a club is like getting a sneak peek into professional life. 👀 College clubs are especially crucial for non-hostellers. They: - Expand your peer network 🌐 - Instill a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility 💼 - Teach you to adapt quickly, learn fast, and master the art of "jugaad" 🎨 You gain invaluable experience in securing sponsors, managing events, understanding operations, and building a tight-knit community outside your classroom. 🤝 For me, my entire network outside of class is thanks to E-Cell, Jadavpur University, and Jadavpur University Model United Nations. These clubs were game-changers, transforming me from a shy introvert into a confident, outgoing individual. They helped me: - Boost my confidence - Overcome stage fright - Manage my attitude and ego The role of clubs in college life is often underrated and underappreciated, yet they offer a wealth of experiences and growth opportunities. What's your college club story? 🏫✨
