The number one indicator of future success, according to data? The expansiveness of your network. I used to HATE hearing this stat because it conjured up visions of who you know being the most important thing—not how good you are at doing your thing. So, basically a bunch of bros in the know failing upwards. #sorrynotsorry Was I doomed to mediocrity because I never am going to be a cool kid? But as I've gotten older, I've experienced a slow but consistent reframe of that. Because these days, a network can be anything. And it can look so beautifully unique for each of us. I've got thousands of compassionate, kind, brilliant thinkers who read my newsletter every week (and reply—I love your replies!). I have an amazing cadre of people in my business circle thanks to the internet. Folks like Nicole Sidoti from Studio Clever, Mark Schiralli of Own Your Mark, Natalie Bullen from Unapologetic Wealth, Nequosha Anderson (my awesome attorney), and of course, Jamar Diggs. (If I left you out and you should be on this list, I ❤️ you and I am so sorry for the oversight or LinkedIn wasn't letting me tag you ugh.) And then I have my incredible local community in Portland—these folks are doing amazing things all the time and I'm so lucky to know them. How did that happen? Talking, sharing, connecting. Most definitely it was NOT from "how can I grow my network today?" It turns out, if you talk about things that excite you, if you share generously, if you make a small amount of effort to build connections—you don't have to be a cool kid to have an expansive and diverse network. 👉 If you're in search of a supportive network that feels like home, there are lots of ways to make that happen. Is community unintentionally killing our community? I’ve been feeling overloaded by the volume of meet-ups, slack groups, check-ins, and share-outs that are filling up my calendar. I want to be here for friends, colleagues and industry peers, but there’s often not enough time left to do the work. I believe that a disproportionate amount of this activity is fuzz on the signal that presents as an easily activated door that once opened, diverges time and energy from the very work that actually provides the salve. Like, WORK work (as opposed to talking and sharing). Research. Quick, deep thinking. Sharp writing. And the hardest part of all, taking action and putting ourselves out there to clients, prospects, and the market. Every 30 min window spent talking about how hard it is, is 30 minutes not making it easier. At Siberia we’ve been incrementally pushing ourselves on this for the last few years. Killing weeklies and standing 1v1s. Iterating on status mechanisms and formats. Most recently, nuking annual reviews (my absolute favorite). Its not for everyone and I’m sure we’ll eventually find that we’ve gone too far, but its an interesting experiment. I don’t know who they are, and I suspect they don’t spend much time on LinkedIn, but tip of the hat to the brutal essentialists and heroes of focus. OK thats it. ❗ ** Your Social Media Reality ** ❗ It should come as no surprise that social media is influenced by parties outside your country of origin. In fact, in countries such as China, Vietnam, and North Korea, companies have formed to fraudulently boost "likes, comments, and impressions" for as little as $0.01 per interaction (source: https://lnkd.in/eG7xxdi7). These companies, known as "Click Farms" (see picture A), are simply a network of inter-connected devices that a single operator can leverage to facilitate hundreds to thousands of clicks per hour that trigger the "viral" algorithms on any social media site. As a moderator for a local community forum, we see this firsthand with dozens of posts weekly for services such as car detailing, vent cleaning, and garage door repair, and other Business-to-Consumer services that are rejected due to a high probability of being scams. When we took over the forum, we were seeing, on average, about 25-30+ scam posts per week from wholesome, "American" looking families "looking for help with their struggling small business" (See Pic B). The reality is that these "families" are fake Facebook profiles using stolen pictures (often multiple pics of them with a baby or small children) and very American sounding names (e.g. Eric Scott, John Martin, etc). It's not until you see under the covers where a large number of these posts are coming from. In this forum alone with over 2,500 members, you can see that about 1 in 8 interactions are coming from countries outside the US (see picture C). Keep in mind, this forum is for a community of about 7,000 people located in Essex county in NJ.  More to come on this but I wanted to lay some groundwork about the state of our social media and the influences that are affecting everything that you see on a daily basis (including this post!).
