How much are ineffective systems costing your business? We met with a client who is looking for advice on addressing a failed finance ERP implementation. Despite investing heavily two years ago, they're still reliant on Excel spreadsheets, unable to provide the necessary insights to the CFO, and challenged by high staff turnover. Root causes of the failed implementation include system configuration based on ineffective processes, lack of integration with other core systems and insufficient investment in change management, leading to poor adoption. Since the implementation, most of the original team have departed, leaving a gap in understanding of key design decisions. Significant resources have been spent to rectify the issues, yet the system remains unfit for purpose. We discussed with the Head of Finance accepting the sunk cost and finding a system that would better serve their needs. She explained that wasn’t an option as it would be too damaging to finance’s credibility with the business. As we stepped through how much this is potentially costing the business in terms of loss of productivity, inability to make key business decisions fast and the actual cost of running basic processes manually, she was shocked by the potential “hidden costs”. It's not uncommon for an ERP implementation to fail, particularly if it is treated merely as a technology upgrade. Simply “switching on” the technology does not equate to success.  At a minimum, key success criteria should include automated reporting of key business KPI’s, integration to key systems to avoid manual workarounds, and adoption by the team. As a business grows, it will likely undergo multiple ERP implementations. Aligning your technology with your business growth must be a strategic component of your growth roadmap. #innovation #technology #changemanagement
