From Struggle to Success: The Tale of a Papaya Tree In the backyard of my new house, I decided to plant a papaya tree. Excited about the prospect of fresh, homegrown fruit, I tended to it diligently. But after a while, I noticed something troubling: the plant wasn’t thriving. In fact, it seemed to be deteriorating. Worried, I decided to give it more water, hoping that would help. Unfortunately, the plant’s condition worsened, and it soon looked like a dry straw, seemingly beyond saving. Determined to solve the problem, I went to a garden center to buy a new papaya plant. I shared my story with the seller, who suggested that I might have been overwatering it. Rather than buying a new plant, I decided to take her advice and drastically reduced the amount of water I was giving my struggling plant. Then, I waited. Weeks went by, and to my delight, I saw a small green leaf emerging from the seemingly dead plant. Encouraged by this sign of life, I continued to care for it, following a more measured watering routine. Slowly but surely, the plant began to flourish. It grew strong and healthy, eventually bearing the most delicious papayas in the yard. This experience taught me a valuable lesson about patience and resilience, one that applies not just to gardening but also to entrepreneurship. Often, when we’re working hard on a project or an invention, it can feel like we’re not making any progress, like we’re nurturing a plant that’s withering away. But sometimes, all it takes is a small change—a tweak in our approach, a bit of patience, or simply giving the project some space—to turn things around. Just as my papaya plant went from a brittle straw to the best plant in the yard, an entrepreneurial idea can blossom into success with the right adjustments and perseverance. Never give up, because sometimes the most vibrant fruits come from the plants that looked like they were on the brink of failure.

VVF is an abbreviation for features to look for when planning a garden. V = Vertical growth (climbing) V = Volume produced (clusters) F = Frequency of harvest (daily or weekly) I am eager to reduce and replace Yard Waste with Fresh Vegetables as I transform my backyard stonescape and lawn to garden over time. Nature covered my stonescape with weeds over time. 🌾🌱 Design converted weedscape to garden, growing food. 🍅🌶🥕🥒 I started inside from seed planted in Egg 🥚 cartons (#byproduct) in good soil. Sales: sold plants in late Spring at a Garage Sale to offset potting soil expense. Education: I produce YouTube how-to videos as well as results. Entertainment: YouTube flower photos & videos with music soundtrack. Gifts: flower and vegetable plants are great gifts. Photojournalism: covering "Blooming News" for hobbyist gardeners. Harvest: menu bonus of sides and entrées Culinary Creativity: casseroles, meals, salads, etc. Frozen Foods: family sized entrees are baked and frozen for later 😋 enjoyment during Winter.

Growing a company is a lot like growing a garden — sometimes you can’t tell the fruit from the weeds. 🍓 I’ve recently taken up “patio gardening” as a way to unwind and stay present - which is so shocking because despite being a very “earthy” person, I’ve never thought gardening was my jam. Cooking yes - growing things…ehhhh. But then it sort of hit me that I’m already growing things. Everyday. Our company, our client’s companies and that seeing literal “fruits of labor” is rewarding in countless (and sometimes very surprising) ways. Even the smallest amount of growth is so motivating to keep going on. My strawberry plant produced a few of the cutest AF strawberries over the weekend, and the funny thing is, even though it’s better for the plant to pick the fruit, I was terrified to do it. I felt like I should wait 'til there was more strawberries to enjoy them. (Sound familiar ? LOL) And TBH, I thought the plant itself had very little fruit on it…until I picked it. Once I did, the plant practically sprang into over drive. There was so much new growth under the ripe strawberries. Growth I couldn't see. And the strawberries I did get to pick - were immensely enjoyable and encouraged me to (enthusiastically) go get another plant. I think this is poignant because sometimes the growth on the surface looks meh, or maybe it’s “not as much” as you hoped it would be — but if you get in there and weed/prune your “plant” (aka startup) you’ll see it’s doing even better than you imagined. Butterfly farmers can start small, very small. Two of the leading butterfly farmers and experts in the field, Rick and Claudia Mikula of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, didn’t know how to start a farm when they started raising butterflies. They used two screen houses in their backyard. Is it for you? Read on for a guide. What You Will Need to Begin Butterfly Farming – Simple Steps Learn Everything You Can About Butterfly Farming and Wild Butterflies Internet access makes it easy to start your education and you should join organizations that support the field. There are organizations such as the Association for Butterflies which offer online classes and webinars. On FB, check out the Association for Butterflies Conservation, Research, Farming and Gardening. One of the most important facts you must research is which species you can raise and sell. The United States Department of Agriculture regulates this. For example, many species of butterflies may not be shipped over state lines in this country. Many species can not be caught in the wild. Acquire a Suitable Area for the Butterfly Farm Whether you start in your backyard or go big, you’ll need to raise caterpillars from the egg in an area or room with controlled temperature and humidity levels. Many farmers rehab an existing greenhouse or buy a greenhouse. You don’t need a lot of room or land to get started, but you do need to preserve the proper environment. Enclosed Habitat The butterfly habitat must be enclosed, as protection against insect pests that thrive in Mother Nature, such as wasps and bees. These insects lay eggs either in or on a caterpillar, which will kill the caterpillar. Growing Host Plants Each species of butterfly has a specific host plant that caterpillars eat. In 99% of the species, the host plants and flowers that the adult butterfly uses for nectar and the host plant for that butterfly’s eggs are NOT the same species. Only the monarchs use the same host plants for both, which is milkweed. The only butterfly caterpillars which feed on artificial food are the painted ladies. The painted ladies are also the species that has most often been approved to be shipped across state lines. Most farmers choose to grow their own host plants, to make sure the food plant hasn’t been treated with an insecticide that would harm caterpillars. Also, you would save money by growing your own plants instead of buying them. Adult butterflies are pollinators but may lay eggs on those same plants. Start Planning Your Business Once you’ve done the research you can start planning. The main season for raising butterflies runs from spring through fall. The life span of a butterfly is short, with most living for about a month. Create a Butterfly
