A client learned from their interns they needed help. The summer interns learned all the tactical skills from their respective departments and at the end of the internship they had to deliver a speech on what they learned and found valuable. Well to the organization's surprise, nobody spent time with the interns on how to effectively communicate. Last week marked Week 5 of my internship, and it felt like one of my strongest weeks yet. I achieved several personal wins that aligned with my summer goals, and it felt great. One aspect I love about this internship is the encouragement to join Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and attend intern events. I've especially enjoyed listening to speakers within the company discuss topics like personal branding, networking, and making the most of our time as interns. If I could leave you with one tip to help you stand out as an intern, it would be to interview people within your company. Setting up a 15-minute chat with someone you heard speak or anyone you see regularly but haven’t spoken to yet is a great way to get to know new people and expand your network. Your internship will fly by so be sure to take advantage of these opportunities to learn and grow. Networking and building relationships can make a significant difference in your internship experience or even your future employment. The story of a 70-year-old man starting as an intern really resonated with me. It reminded me of my own journey as I search for a co-op internship after having a few years of industry experience. In many ways, it feels like starting over—new experiences, new teams, a new country, and new friends. But that’s the beauty of it! After the rain stops, carrying an umbrella becomes a burden for everyone. Similarly, in many corporate settings, the loyalty of interns often faces a similar fate. I've noticed a concerning trend in several ed-tech companies. Interns work hard for three months, delivering results, only to receive a piece of paper and then watch as new interns take their place for the next three months. This practice is fundamentally flawed and needs to be addressed. The value that interns bring should be acknowledged and retained, fostering a culture of loyalty and growth within the organization.
