Dean's Chair Professor | Associate Professor | Deputy Head (Academic Matters) | Director (Centre for Resource Circularity and Resilience) at NUS
The 7-years relationship finally come to a closure. Back in 2017, I was nominated to the newly formed Built Environment SkillsFuture Tripartite (BEST) Taskforce which is a manpower development strategy under the Construction Industry Transformation Map (ITM) and reports to the Future Economy Council (FEC) Built Environment (BE) Cluster Sub-Committee. Initially tasked with contributing to the Civil Engineering Workgroup which focused on devising a holistic training pathway for aspiring professionals. This pathway, spanning Pre-Employment Training (PET), internships, and Continuing Education and Training (CET), aimed to equip individuals with expertise in integrated Digital Delivery (IDD), Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA), and Green Buildings. Our goal was clear: to fortify the Construction ITM while fostering stronger collaborations between Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) and industry stakeholders. As the BEST Taskforce transitioned into the iBuildSG Tripartite Committee, my role evolved, leading me to a new workgroup in Communication and Engagement. Here, the workgroup dedicated efforts to crafting strategies aimed at amplifying awareness of the BE sector and its myriad career opportunities. Subsequently, I assumed the co-chair of a workgroup focused on refining IHL curricula, enhancing pathways for aspiring BE professionals, and augmenting the allure of BE careers to students and fresh graduates. Over the past seven years, countless hours have been invested in deliberations and preparations aimed at transforming the BE sector. Our collective ambition has been to enhance productivity, embrace digitalization, and champion decarbonization for a greener built environment. These efforts were driven by a shared vision of inspiring future generations to embrace the BE sector and contribute meaningfully to our nation's development. As the saying goes, "It takes a village to raise a child," I have witnessed how it takes an entire BE community to nurture and develop every aspiring civil engineer or BE professional. This journey is far from over; it is a continuous evolution. I firmly believe that the BE community will embark on this new chapter with vigor and purpose. Special thanks to the co-chairs Zainal Sapari, Chia Ngiang Hong and Tan Chee Kiat for their leadership in the iBuildSG TC. #BCA #iBuildSG #NUS #CDE #nuscde #nuscivil #nuscivilandenvironmentalengineering NUS Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering https://lnkd.in/dzcdEGzr Building and Construction Authority

Last year was a lesson in my job tenure. I had to go through different situations to complete the unfinished jobs as soon as possible. We, as a team, had to figure out the critical paths of the project as we were moving faster than we expected. Since the quality of the construction was our priority, along with other factors, we faced difficulties continuing the pace. The one thing we never did was compromise with quality despite the immense workload. We found the light eventually after searching the whole night as we did everything as a team. I learned again that only teamwork results in the successful implementation of a project and moves the team person towards individual achievements. #PBRLP_Viaduct_1

This strategy has supported the career launch of 20 apprentices over the past decade, highlighting the success of nurturing talent in-house. Maintenance and Reliability Manager, Paul Bevan , emphasised the strategy's role in maintaining a skilled workforce and reducing reliance on external contractors. Success stories include Power Conagh, a former apprentice, now a Maintenance Team Leader, who underscores the importance of supporting new talent. EP SHB continues this commitment, planning to recruit more apprentices in 2024, with Charlotte Hogben of HETA praising the lasting impact of this partnership on aspiring engineers. 🐠 In 2023, I&J, in collaboration with the Swiss-South African Cooperation, enabled three young engineering apprentices – Michael Van Staden, Anele Malahla, and Siphosethu Mathana – to gain valuable work experience. Their hard work and dedication have made them valued members of their teams. 💡 I&J continues to develop young seafarers through its cadetship programme, which includes on-the-job training at sea, technical training at a maritime college, practical training in ship maintenance at I&J’s workshops, and compliance training with the South African Maritime Safety Authority. While at sea, cadets are mentored by deck and engineering officers. The current group of cadets will conclude their three-year programme in October 2025, with a new group starting in 2024.
