The rising number of patent applications are etched as a reflection for rising innovation in the minds of policymakers. Policymakers offer incentives to academicians to patent their ideas. However, in this blogpost, I argue against offering blanket incentives without regard to field or technology. I cite 6 applications, symptoms of a much larger malaise, from the Patent Journal dated 12/4/2024. Instead of promoting innovation, incentives for patenting to academics may be responsible for vaguely filed applications, lacking disclosure, novelty and/or inventive step. Such applications use scientific terms in vogue and apply for something vague, which is ineligible for patenting. I argue that such incentives should not be granted in a blanket manner, should only be granted when the application is successful, and efforts should be made to identify patent intensive fields where such incentives are streamlined. https://lnkd.in/g6FUyQZG #UniversityGrantsCommission #UGC #PatentsandInnovation #Patents #Innovation

We are pleased to share our new paper published in the Journal of Technology Transfer. Ruoying Zhou and I investigated from an institutional perspective the interaction between knowledge exchange (KE) and commercial activities (such as patents, licensing, and spin-offs). Our findings reveal that while provision of continuing professional development courses, facilities and equipment, and consultancy significantly impact commercial activities such as patenting and licensing, collaborative research appears to be a strong predictor for spin-offs generation. Some general implications for HEIs’ policy and Technology Transfer Offices are also offered. It is both encouraging and motivating to witness the widespread innovation occurring throughout India. This wave of creativity and the drive to protect these innovations have permeated every region of the country. Nagaland University stands out among the universities, significantly boosting its innovation index by filing numerous patents. The increased awareness and motivation to innovate and safeguard these innovations among educational institutions, teachers, professors, and students can be attributed to extensive awareness programs conducted by the Patent Office and patent professionals, as well as government initiatives and benefits designed to promote innovation in educational institutions. #nagalanduniversity #patent #patents #indianpatentoffice #patentoffice

#recruiters, #talentacquisition - get a better grasp on #hbcu #recruitment by: 1 - Making a list of institutions that correspond with your industry and are geographically feasible; If you're located in Utah and the HBCU is in Florida, you better provide fantastic pay or factor in travel allowances 2 - Understanding why those institutions are leading producers of the talent you need; DO NOT keep running to Howard without knowledge of the curriculum and emerging programming 3 - Using articles like this for research; Note key campus leaders, departments to contact, and programmatic details #hbcus | #whynothbcus March 14, 2024
Achieving a record high for single-year patents awarded, Morgan State surpasses all HBCUs nationwide, with its Office of Technology Transfer driving a surge in patent applications and securing 13 patent awards in 2023, while also advancing research and expanding entrepreneurship opportunities #TheMorganWay. https://bit.ly/3wRZBJ8

📰 New article alert: 'Patent Applications for Busy Academics - Why bother?' 😰 🗓 For academics, the thought of navigating the patent system can seem daunting, especially in the face of jam-packed schedules. ✍ This article highlights how accessible and valuable the patent process can be. Reaching out to a patent attorney to write and file a patent application doesn't have to be a major undertaking - particularly if you've already drafted a scientific manuscript. Your friendly patent attorney (hi 👋😊) will guide you through the process and work with your local tech transfer office. Just as importantly, the article underscores the importance of patent applications and intellectual property (IP) plans when it comes to securing 💰✨funding✨💰 - whether that's through research grants, venture capital, or other schemes. Funders are increasingly looking for evidence of IP strategy, so having a patent in the works can give your proposals a competitive edge 🏆 💡 If you're a researcher who's been putting off the patent process, I'd encourage you to give this article a read. It might just inspire you to take the first step towards safeguarding your innovations! Page 39, Vol55(2) Australian Biochemist magazine: https://shorturl.at/W9GxX

🚀 Reflecting on a Transformative Session at BEPIUG Last week at the Belgium Patent Information User Group (BEPIUG) meeting held at the University of Antwerp, we had the pleasure of delving deep into the fascinating world of AI with our very own Peter Erdödy and Sylvain Barone. It was an enlightening session where we explored the intricate layers of AI technology—from Machine Learning to Deep Learning and Transformers. 🧠 Unveiling the Magic Behind Octimine Our discussions centered on how our patent search and analytics platform, Dennemeyer Octimine, harnesses these technologies for diverse use cases. We uncovered the secrets of the AI "black box," learning how we can shape our results through iterative work, enhancing both accuracy and relevance. 💡 Beyond the Technology Moreover, we discussed the broader implications of integrating AI into our workflows. The potential for significant process and productivity improvements was a hot topic, providing us with a glimpse into what the future holds for the IP workforce on a larger scale. 🔍 Looking Ahead This meeting was not just about understanding AI but also about envisioning its future impact on the intellectual property sector. We are excited to continue this journey, pushing the boundaries of innovation and efficiency. Special thanks to the University of Antwerp for hosting this incredible event and to BEPIUG for inviting us to share our insights with such a distinguished audience. #AI #MachineLearning #DeepLearning #Transformers #Innovation #IP #DennemeyerOctimine #BEPIUG
🌟 Today is World Intellectual Property Day! The perfect opportunity to stress the importance of IP literature as a starting point to develop innovative technologies and applications. In this perspective, our IP team was proud to host The Belgian Patent Information User Group (BEPIUG) spring meeting this week. Steven Vermeir had the pleasure to give the attendees insights into the management of the patent portfolio of the University of Antwerp and to exchange best practices with the industry and other research institutes. The key take-away message was that students and researchers should be introduced much faster in the exciting world of patent databases to boost their research projects 📈 #WorldIPDay #IntellectualProperty
