“Everyone is this room is uniquely beautiful” Simon Frederick in conversation with Leanne Pero “Presence” Acrylic and Mixed Media On Dibond 30 x 60 cm Continuing with my Healing series, I realise that the pieces I’m releasing now are thoughts in progress, and I’ll reference them in much larger abstracted works which I am planning which will force me to let rip on the surface. I am mindful that fragility is pervasive at the moment both existentially and emotionally. Yet we need to recognise that the opposite of fragility is not stability, but resilience: the ability to cope with changes in capacity, effectiveness or legitimacy. I’m going to see the sell- out stage production of “The Picture of Dorian Gray” soon. Art plays a very significant role in the original novel which revolves around the question of whether art is life or life is art. This theme links to aestheticism, morality, and influence. The title suggests a duality between the portrait of the protagonist and the reality of his changing nature: a tension with appearance and reality. The novel altered the way Victorians understood the world they inhabited. It heralded the end of a repressive Victorianism, and after its publication, literature had a different look. Yet the Dorian Gray that Victorians never knew was even more daring than the novel the British press condemned as “vulgar,” “unclean”, “poisonous” and “discreditable”. There is no degradation here, only your preconceptions when you first saw this painting. The frame for the picture is a part of the old window transom, covered with a layer of varnish. This gives the picture a special effect and expressiveness. Lighting from the inside of the frame can provide an element of intimacy in the room in the evening. But the main emphasis is on the romantic philosophical theme of the picture. This is the first work in a future series of similar techniques.
