Some high school students -- and their parents-- heard some big news this morning. Dartmouth College is joining Massachusetts Institute of Technology in reinstating the dreaded standardized testing requirement. Does this mean other selective colleges will follow? The move reignites a debate over whether the SAT/ACT requirement helps or hurts lower-income students. Dartmouth and MIT argue that the exams are a useful tool in identifying promising students from less advantaged backgrounds, while critics say the assessments favor wealthy students who can pay for pricey tutors and test-prep programs. Applications soared when colleges dropped the requirement during the pandemic. #SAT #ACT #testprep #highereducation

It has been almost 15 years since I last published an article, but I am happy to report that WCTC's evaluation of its 8-week calendar implementation is now available in the Community College Journal of Research and Practice. It took a lot of work by a lot of people to make the 8-week calendar happen, and then a lot more work to evaluate the results across 197 courses offered at the College, but I hope that our peers in the two-year college space can benefit from what we have accomplished. #studentsuccess #highereducation #highereducationresearch https://lnkd.in/gRVQkiYE

Guess which Ivy Leaguers are reinstating testing requirements? Yale, Brown, and Dartmouth are among the highly selective colleges that are saying bringing back standardized testing will help low-income students. So are Georgetown and MIT. Most other universities are keeping the tests optional, citing the same reason. Higher education writer Ira Porter took a stab at seeing who’s right? What are your thoughts? #sats #education #testing #trendingtopics https://lnkd.in/eDFHpfvP

MIT and Dartmouth go back to requiring ACT/SAT. Test-optional policies harm low-income students looking to stand out. Test scores should be used as one component in a holistic review of an application. A 30 on the ACT by a low-income student at a poor-performing high school should not be considered equal to a 30 from a top-tier private high school. Don't remove a crucial way for low-income students to stand out.

Attention! Harvard will require test scores for admission again. The college joins other selective universities that have recently made similar decisions in the wake of new research. Harvard becomes the latest Ivy League school to reinstate the requirement after making the choice optional during the pandemic. Dartmouth College, Yale and Brown universities announced similar changes in recent weeks, after officials cited data suggesting that SAT and ACT scores were the best predictors of students’ academic performance at their schools — and that making the tests optional could further disadvantage applicants from more challenging backgrounds. Stanford is reinstating its SAT/ACT requirement. This is great news for the corporations that power those pay-to-play exams and for families with the resources to prepare. It is awful for the already omnipresent pursuit of perfection placed on students, as well as for already marginalized families without the time or resources to pay for the cost of adequately preparing. I find it ironic that as corporations move away from the status quo of traditional diplomas and seek more nuanced skills (technical and soft alike) the heavy academic hitters are reverting to the skewed and prejudiced standardized tests. #stanford #act #sat #education

Bloomberg article on changes coming to the ACT and SAT exams and how universities are reconsidering if they should be optional or required. #collegeadmissions #standardizedtesting #sat #act #highered “The SAT or the ACT is the single best predictor of a student’s academic performance at Yale,” Quinlan said on the Admissions Beat podcast in October, challenging a widely held belief that high-school grade point average is often a better indicator of future academic outcomes. The SAT’s math section in particular helps predict which students will persist as science majors, he said. The standardized tests themselves are undergoing significant changes. Starting next month, the SAT is transitioning to a digital format that adapts to each test taker — based on how the student performs on the first module of questions, the second will either be more or less difficult. In addition, the duration of the SAT is being reduced to two hours and 14 minutes from three hours. Meanwhile, the ACT is expanding the number of computer-based testing sites while maintaining the exam’s almost three-hour length. https://lnkd.in/ekbgc-jW
