Enrollment is a hot topic on every campus across the country, or at least it should be. However, many institutions keep their admissions criteria secret and require students to jump through unnecessary hurdles. In this article, Roy Spence challenges institutions to remove barriers and obstacles in the enrollment cycle making a college education obtainable. Could this be a solution to provide access and support enrollment goals? Should admissions criteria be entirely transparent? Karen Droisen, PhD, one of our college coaches with A Starting Line, provides answers to a couple of questions that we often hear. When should my high-school student and I start the college search? You should start the search in junior year, ideally in the spring to give your student ample time to complete a thoughtful, appealing, and competitive application. Some families start planning for the search in sophomore or even freshman year by choosing challenging classes and fulfilling summer programs to ensure that their student will be a compelling candidate. Generally, I tell my families that you can never start too early! Does my student have to complete applications for every single school to which s/he wants to apply? Fortunately, most schools use the Common Application, a web platform that stores student information and sends it to schools when the student is ready to apply. The student can edit their Common App at any time, up until it’s submitted to schools. Some schools use the Coalition Application, and a few states have their own application systems (Texas and California, for example). Students can start completing the Common App on August 1st.

Another college acceptance season is wrapping up this week with the last round of decisions. And with it, another crazy year of admissions. The system is broken. Families need to take more control and be less enamored with name-brands and approach the process as a consumer with affordability and outcomes in mind. Colleges need to rethink the process so that it's more applicant-friendly. And we should put more limits on the number of apps you can file through the Common App (or even on your own through the schools themselves). How would you fix the system?

Imagine getting an admission offer before you even apply. Sounds like a dream, right? 🤩✨ Well, that dream is now becoming a reality for more students than ever before, thanks to the expansion of the Common App’s Direct Admissions program for the 2024–25 cycle. With 116 partner institutions across 34 states—up from 71 institutions last year—this innovative approach is changing the way colleges and students connect. Launched in 2021, the program allows colleges to proactively offer admission to students, simplifying the process and opening doors students might not have considered. While its impact on overall enrollment remains to be seen, Common App’s commitment to expanding Direct Admissions shows how the landscape of higher education is evolving. Students, parents, and educators should take note—this could be the future of college admissions. #DirectAdmissions #CommonApp #HigherEducation #CollegeAdmissions #CareerGuidance #StudyAbroad Aashna Kapoor Bhawini Vasudeva Kirti Dixit Tarun Gosvāmī TANYA HUSSAIN

"In the past decade, extra-institutional file-sharing and homework-help websites have gone from being small-scale operations to large corporate businesses. File-sharing and homework-help websites threaten academic integrity when students use assessment work sourced from these sites as if it were their own. However, little is known about how students use these websites, what motivates students’ use, and whether students are aware of the risks of using these sites. In an international survey of 1000 students, nearly half had heard of, or used, file-sharing and homework-help websites, and 377 completed a longer follow-up survey. We also undertook qualitative analysis of social media posts related to file-sharing and homework-help websites. Students indicate that they..."

Today, Common App launched its 2024-25 Direct Admissions program with 116 participating colleges and universities. This initiative aims to expand access for first-generation and low- to middle-income students by offering proactive admissions opportunities directly within the Common App platform. 🔑 What's new this year? Students can see, learn about, and act on their offers directly in the app. Additional outreach and resources will support counselors, families, and students receiving direct admissions offers. 📈 Why it matters: Since piloting Direct Admissions, 3 out of 4 students who received an offer and added the school to their list went on to apply. This program is a game-changer for students who may have thought college was out of reach. This is just one of the many ways we're working towards our moonshot goal of closing the equity gap for low- and middle-income students by 2030. 📝 Learn more about how Common App is making college more accessible: https://bit.ly/3Tf9OHX

The best time to start is in June and July. The Common Application takes roughly 5-10 hours, though this estimate can vary widely. The initial interview is the most essential piece of the process, since that is how we get to know what makes the applicant special and unique. As we chat about extracurricular interests and activities, we start filling out the Activities/Honors/Additional Information sections. We also determine whether we can take advantage of the COVID question (this may be removed for the 2023 application season) and whether the student needs to fill out an additional question (for example if they had disciplinary action or switched schools). These take extra time, of course, but also provide an opportunity to tell the admissions officer more details. Students whose activities sections are full and complex require extra time and strategy. Please note: Not all schools take the Common Application but I’ve never met a student who didn’t use it at all. We know how to repurpose writings from the Common App for the Coalition App, UC system, or college specific applications like Georgetown, MIT, and Loyola. Tips & Tricks for senior high school students that have already submitted their application to universities. Network, network, network! February is the month when your high-school counselors submit your Mid-Year report updating the admission office on your grades & school performance. However, it is your responsibility to send other updates that could add to your application. In the email, which should be structured like a formal letter, you should include the following: * Your name * Date of birth * University or applicant ID (like your Common App ID number) so that they can efficiently match the new info with your files * A clear explanation of what you’re updating * Attached documents if it is an updated or new score report or a new letter of recommendation Make it short and sweet. It’s not time to write a new “Why School” essay or send an additional personal statement .#CollegeAdmissions #ParentingJourney #HigherEdParents #NavigatingCollege #ParentingTeens #CollegePrep #EducationChoices #ParentingSuccess #UniversityBound #AdmissionsProcess #ParentingTips #FutureLeaders #StudentSuccess #ParentingGoals #CollegeBoundKids #EducationalJourney #ParentingSupport
