And again, I've been quite fortunate having served on President Rama pauses for our Commission. Cisco allowed me to actually serve on the Commission and I actually chaired the policy and regulation work stream. What I like is what he's done is and and I know again, this has been something that has been said before, but what I like is that he's also now taken the information regulator. He's taken occasion, he's actually collaborated and actually collapsed these into one, which also makes for quicker decision making so it doesn't move from one body to the next. What technologies accelerating at such a phenomenal pace? And sometimes I don't even think that we understand that, yes, we, we, we are keeping up. When you think about policy and policymakers, I'm sure the thing that comes to mind is technocrats in Navy blue suits or beige suits in a cake buildings, right? Well, I mentioned this because with all the buzz around generative AI, there's also been a lot of buzz around policy. And with the AU I Act that becoming a legislation, there's a lot of talk around where South Africa stands or where the continent is around policy in terms of artificial intelligence. Today in studio, I'm joined by Charmaine Hovey, who is the Senior Director of Government Strategy and Policy at Cisco Africa. Shamain joins me to discuss the policy landscape in South Africa and all things ICT. Charmaine, welcome. Thank you, Sir. Nikki Fair, thank you so much for help for having me. And by the way. I can wholeheartedly agree when you talk about how policymakers, policy leaders, and, you know, policy diplomats are actually perceived. I was recently called the policy diplomats or tech diplomat, and I thought, oh, wow, that sounds quite interesting. But I think it's a very interesting role. I was telling my mentees this morning that I get to meet heads of states. I get to meet regulators, policymakers.

Governments should recognize and encourage the presence of independent tower providers, who in addition to being neutral operators, maximize the principle of sharing, Vital for Meaningful Connectivity. Econometric analyses have confirmed that there are correlations between the market presence of independent tower companies and the development of the wireless industry. In the fourteen African countries studied, an increase of 10% in the number of independent towers led to a minimum 5.95% increase in 4G coverage levels, a 3.29% increase in wireless broadband adoption levels, and a 5.07% increase in service quality levels, which were measured by mobile broadband download speed. The econometric analyses validated the correlations between the market presence of independent tower companies and the development of the wireless industry in African countries. An increase of 10% in the number of independent towers is associated with a 1.38% increase in mobile market competition levels, as measured by a decrease in the Herfindahl Hirschman Index. It also drives a 7.82% improvement in mobile affordability, which was measured by a decrease in the mobile broadband service price relative to the monthly GNI per capita.
