Within the next couple of weeks, a group of new talent will be conferred their undergraduate degrees and commence the job hunt. While graduating in May is more common, graduating in December carries uniqueness to it. I graduated in May 2017, but I think it is important to recognize the sometimes advantages of a December graduation. Foremost, there is no shame in graduating in December, and here are the advantages: 1.      You may have a higher edge in the Fall job market due to a smaller pool of recent graduates. This may allow your resume to be noticed, more quickly. Plus, networking may come easier because professionals may have more time to meet with you as opposed to the busy summer season. Additionally, this final semester could allow you to add something to your resume you were unable to add the previous 8 semesters. 2.      Assuming you worked the preceding summer, you may have additional savings. During your final semester, you are often balancing studies with traveling to interviews. Some of these interviews may be a few hours from your home base and/or school, so you may need accommodations. Often, rates for hotels and transportation are lower in Fall semester, but always be sure to schedule accordingly! 3.      December graduations occur, typically, just a couple weeks from Christmas, which is when a lot of people take off time from work. The benefit of this is that there may be more time and room at the graduation ceremony for you to celebrate this new chapter with your family and enjoy the Christmas season. Some people take more than 4 years to graduate. Some people graduate in December as opposed to May. Detours happen, opportunities happen. People realize Biology isn’t for them, so they change to something incredibly different (calling out myself here.) Sometimes, they add time, and often, for the best. The length of time it takes to and season when you graduate does not mean your resume will have caution tape. How your time of undergraduate enrollment shapes you will lead to the impact you wish to have post-undergraduate. Best wishes to everyone graduating in the next couple of weeks. Not remotely surprised by this. As I've mentioned here before, I just finished teaching a group of 14 college interns this semester, as I have done for decades. By and large, few of them had any real professional job experience. #Graduates will be caught flat footed as they get ready to launch after graduation because they are products of a #liberalarts education, which by design does not prepare anyone for an actual "career." I love doing #careercoaching for this very reason.
