Extinction is a choice. As the Maugean Skate inches closer to extinction, the Wilderness Society is advocating for a full removal of fish farms from Macquarie Harbour. The Maugean Skate is is now thought to be entirely restricted to Macquarie Harbour and ending fish farming will facilitate its recovery while restoring the World Heritage Area values of Macquarie Harbour. This crisis also shows the need for the Albanese government to significantly strengthen Australia's nature laws. Australia’s world class nature, and unique species like the Maugean Skate, deserve laws that actually protect habitats and stop extinctions. How can we expect people to respect nature and Ireland's key #biodiversity areas when the fines are such a pittance? It seems that in this case, it was just handier to pay the €8,000 fine than look for ministerial permissions. Penalties for the wanton destruction of valuable ecosystem services must be sufficient to deter people from these criminal activities. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos announced that $3 million is available in the third round of the State’s Invasive Species Grant Program (ISGP). This grant program, supported by the State Environmental Protection Fund (EPF), is designed to advance projects that target both aquatic and terrestrial invasive species across the state, with six funding categories that address invasive species spread prevention – early detection and rapid response, research, management planning, and education and outreach. Yet Claravale’s plans have not been assessed for harm to threatened species under our national nature laws. That’s despite the requirement to refer projects with likely significant impacts for assessment. It’s something we see over and over again. But there’s a way to end this. The Albanese Government can stop Australia’s deforestation crisis. How? Breaking: a joint investigation by Greenpeace Australia Pacific, The Wilderness Society Australia, and QCC has uncovered multiple instances of large-scale deforestation with no assessment or approval. Habitat for koala, northern quoll and greater glider, was bulldozed. How does this happen? There are alarming loopholes in our national environment law, the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC), which is currently undergoing once-in-a-generation reform.
