Circularity is key for reducing our reliance on resource extraction and the biodiversity loss and GHG emissions that come with that extraction. CSRD is likely to cause many US group companies to talk about circularity in a way they haven’t before. In our recently published study, a circularity index was developed to track trends in #EU #Circulareconomy, and its projected trajectory up to 2035 has been presented. This projection provides a benchmark for countries to assess their progress towards #sustainability goals. The analysis revealed a promising trend of increasing circularity in the coming years. However, to meet the ambitious circular economy targets (in terms of maximizing #recycling and minimizing #landfilling), the pace of improvement must significantly accelerate. To achieve these targets, countries will need to adopt a range of proactive policies, including: (1) Accelerating permit approval times for MSW treatment facilities: This will help to reduce the time it takes to bring new MSW treatment facilities online, thereby facilitating increased recycling rates. (2) Introducing more flexibility in state aid rules: This will empower governments to provide more financial support to the recycling industry, making recycling more affordable and accessible to businesses and households. (3) Empowering service users or waste generators: This can be achieved by giving households and businesses more control over their waste disposal choices, which can encourage recycling and reduce landfilling. (4) Implementing tax credits for recycling and waste reduction: This will make recycling more attractive to businesses and households, incentivizing them to adopt sustainable practices. (5) Leveraging specialized funds: Governments can establish specialized funds to invest in recycling infrastructure and technologies, further boosting the recycling industry's capacity. "It's the most wonderful time of the year! 🎄 Not just because Christmas is around the corner, but because many companies are crunching numbers and preparing their sustainability reports for publication in Q1 or Q2 next year. 📊🌍 I've read so many reports that confuse recycling with circularity. Although recycling is part of the circular economy, it should be considered as the last resort of the entire circularity loop and definitely not the only measure of circularity. Fortunately, many companies are now aligning their reporting with #CSRD, and by no means does CSRD only take into consideration recycling to measure circularity. It requires much more... So let's dig a little deeper on that. 💡 ESRS E5 focuses on Resource Use and Circular Economy. Generally speaking, it's divided into two sections: Resource Inflows and Resource Outflows. The resource inflows category includes datapoints such as: Circular design 🔄 Circular business practices 🔄 Actions taken to prevent waste generation 🚯 Description of materials that are sourced from by-products or waste stream 🔄 Use of secondary raw materials 🔄 The resource outflows category includes datapoints such as: Expected product durability ⏳ Repairability of products 🔧 Waste (hazardous and non-hazardous) 🗑️ Rates of recyclable content in products ♻️ Rates of recyclable content in packaging 📦 By no means is ESRS E5 measuring circularity using recyclability as a single measure. Europe is at the forefront of the green industrial transformation, championing the circular economy to reduce environmental impact and bolster economic resilience. By implementing the newly adopted frameworks under the #EGD , Europe aims to promote eco-design, extend product life cycles, and minimize waste. This shift not only supports #sustainability but also enhances Europe’s strategic #autonomy by reducing dependency on raw materials. Embracing circular business models is essential for achieving climate & environmental goals and fostering innovation in industries. I am immensely proud that EU Environment and Climate has laid the foundation for a green industrial policy by pioneering legislation such as the batteries regulation, shipment of waste regulation, sustainable products framework or the so called ESPR, PPWR, Green Claims, SUP, the IED etc. These acts are shaping industrial modernisation and were deliberately based on the internal market to create a LPF in the EU. The economics of the transition are ultimately linked to resource depletion. Carbon and energy reduction are absolute key in this regard. But we should be aware that third countries will go beyond carbon and energy reduction and integrate wider environmental foot printing into their production and value chains. Indeed #circularity not only contributes to climate mitigation efforts but it also promotes a cleaner and healthier environment - by acting at the source to prevent pollution and environmental degradation, - by limiting the use of toxic materials and components in manufacturing processes and products, - by reducing waste through designing products for reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling, and finally - by conserving natural resources as the use of materials are optimised and the use of renewable and sustainable resources are promoted.
