So inspired after the International AIDS Society conference #aids2024 in Munich with my amazing team. Australia’s response to the HIV epidemic has been world leading, but there is still much work to be done. We must stop criminalising HIV and key populations, and stop legalised discrimination against people with HIV if we want to achieve our goal of #endingHIV by 2030. We must repeal mandatory testing laws which increase stigma and discrimination against PLHIV and are not based on evidence, we must clarify consent laws so they can’t be used against PLHIV for non-disclosure, we must remove criminal penalties from s79 of the Public Health Act (NSW) and shift the focus towards mutual responsibility, we must stop criminalising non-intentional transmission of HIV and repeal exposure offences, we must remove discrimination against PLHIV in migration policy and regulations, we must hold insurers to account when they unlawfully deny insurance to PLHIV, and finally we must stop criminalising people who use drugs, and divert resources from police, the justice system and gaols towards health, housing and social security. And we must ensure that affected communities are involved in every step along the way #putpeoplefirst.
