#4ugust Doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue. It’s a call to trial 4 day week in August 2024. The 4 Day Week Campaign wants to see a 32-hour working week. In 2022 it launched a six-month pilot in which 61 companies with more than 3,000 staff participated. At a time when #hybridworking is seeing regulation change in April to allow requests for hybrid working structure, does this chime with the mood music in British Industry? Many of my clients find it hard to find a solution that fits, a language to bridge the debate and a best practice model to follow.. As ever the determination of choice is industry, demographic, location, talent pool specific. Management is a craft in which no one size fits all.

If I were writing a Bill of Rights for knowledge workers, having the autonomy and flexibility to work wherever and whenever you are most optimized would be my first amendment. (Notice that I didn’t say “wherever and whenever you want.” I think it’s an important distinction. I mean, I “want” to work zero hours in zero places. Trust me I’d rather be doing karaoke.) Even as an insane, 1000 volume extrovert who can function on 20 minutes of sleep per day, I work from home sometimes. It unlocks productivity at times when inspiration strikes, which can be hard to control. When I’m in an office surrounded by good people, I’m generally optimized. That’s my natural execution habitat I’d say. And of course being out and about meeting new people, or public speaking, those charge me up. They deliver energy to me. But all of that has to be maintained in a constant state of balance and dynamic equilibrium. I can’t be out with people all the time every day. And every person, every company, every team will have their own multivariable calculus equations for what that equation looks like for their optimized output. And it probably changes day to day! I think this philosophy underlies everything we are working on at Stanza. Making it easier to find space for scenarios where the traditional brokerage ecosystem isn’t really designed. But ALSO, making it easier to manage day to day tasks and chores in ways that can coincide with your optimized work location. If your work is optimized on a certain day by being in the office, we want to remove some of the obstacles from your personal life that can create conflict.
