This March, join us as we tell epilepsy to GET MUCKED! Sign up for the Purple Muck Challenge to spread awareness and raise funds for people living with epilepsy. Participation is easy. Simply: 1. Did you know that epilepsy is a significant part of Coach Heather Binns‘s life’s journey? Epilepsy, a neurological disorder, doesn’t discriminate based on age, race, or gender. Shockingly, 1 in 10 individuals will experience a seizure, and 1 in 26 will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. Heather’s personal battle with epilepsy began in her twenties after a near-death experience, leading to simple partial and complex partial seizures. The journey was bewildering, navigating from one doctor’s office to another in search of answers to the peculiar sensations she was experiencing. In our ongoing commitment to raise awareness about epilepsy and empower individuals to support those affected by it, We’ve formed a team for the Epilepsy Walk Los Angeles on April 28th at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Imagine a big, extended family that comes together when someone is facing a life-changing condition. Some help with practical things, others examine and work out the science behind it all. Everyone is united for the common good. This is what our Christmas Appeal is all about. Every year, thousands of babies in Australia are born with Craniosynostosis, a skull deformity. Untreated, the condition can lead to developmental delays, seizures and more. Parents are left confused and anxious, not knowing what the future holds and what the diagnosis means for their child. What we do know is that each and every family desperately needs better access to immediate and individualised support, so that they are better equipped to face adversity. Like most parents, Brisbane couple Ashlea and Sean were not given any information about daughter Sienna’s condition and what to expect. “The operation was one of the hardest days of our lives, but the hard part didn’t stop there. It continued. Watching your baby go through something without being able to help them, you’d do anything to put yourself in their place. Sienna’s resilience was an inspiration to all” Ashlea says. “We had never heard of Craniosynostosis before. Craniofacial Australia provided such a safety net to our family. After the operation, Sienna received her Care Pack which put a huge smile on her face, and mine. We cannot thank Craniofacial Australia enough.” Our investment in research is critical to better informing and supporting families like Sienna’s. A current research study we are funding looks at the psychosocial supports that would benefit families following a diagnosis. Led by Prof Rachel Roberts from the University of Adelaide, they are identifying where the gaps lie, from diagnosis to post-treatment. Like many men in November, I want to break free from my beard in favour of a Freddie Mercury-style moustache to help grow awareness about mental health, suicide prevention, prostate and testicular cancer. Here are some important reasons why: Globally, on average, 1 man dies of suicide every 60 seconds. With 3 out of 4 suicides in the UK being men. More than 1.4 million men worldwide are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and it's the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK. Testicular cancer is the most common-form of cancer from men aged 15-39. Movember fund groundbreaking projects all over the world which help educate and support men during tough times and help to accelerate change 💪 I won't just be growing a moustache, I will be putting my cardio to the test by taking on the London Landmarks Half Marathon Limited next year to help raise money for Movember. Today, we commemorate #DonateLife Blue and Green Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about tissue and organ donation. As we reflect on this day, two crucial issues come to light regarding transplant care. First, it’s critical to acknowledge the pivotal role that caregivers play through every step of the process. Most living donations occur within families, increasing the likelihood of the donor becoming a caregiver to the recipient. Second, it's imperative to address the inequities families of color face to access the waitlist, find a suitable match, and navigate the donation process.
