At last, Life comes full circle! It seems unbelievable when claimed that a drone can be foolproof against all sorts of radio jamming. However, a strange new FPV kamikaze #drone tells a different story. The innovative approach used here to overcoming radio interference was – instead of relying on radio signals, it communicates with the operator through a fiber-optic cable spooled out as it flies! This spool of fiber optic cable can be attached to a optical transceiver used for high-speed communications. Now, despite being undetectable, this drone is only effective for very limited-range reconnaissance. But the fun fact is, the above mentioned technology was used from 1940 to late 1970s for the ‘wire-guided missiles’, but was cut short due to the introduction of new & innovative solutions such as radio frequency. Who knows, perhaps the answers to many of our current technological challenges lie in revisiting old technologies, but from a different perspective! "CNS Drone SkyRF® measurement system maturity, evolution ongoing" by Domien De Ruyck and Hervé Demule. IFIS showcases innovations in communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) inspection. The event is internationally recognized as the reference for all those involved with CNS systems. The 22nd edition of IFIS will be held July 8-12 in Nagoya, Japan. Intersoft Services, together with partner Skyguide, will present the maturity and ongoing development of the CNS drone SkyRF® measurement system. After the presentation of the first successful deployment at IFIS 2018 and the analysis of the first 4 years of operation at IFIS 2022, a second generation of the CNS Drone SkyRF® has been jointly developed by Skyguide and Intersoft Electronics. The new transceiver from Intersoft Electronics is not only able to measure localizer, glidepath and distance measuring equipment (DME) simultaneously and in high resolution, but also very high frequency omni-directional range  (VOR) systems, radar and any other CNS equipment. How these measurements are performed is explained in a comprehensive white paper. The paper also describes the CNS Drone SkyRF® measurement system and lists the benefits, backed up by concrete examples. For example, you can read how the pre-commissioning of a new instrument landing system (ILS) in Zurich was reduced from 3 weeks to only 8 hours. Tactical Grade MEMS IMU Tactical-grade IMU have some unique core features. For example, they are able to operate gyroscopes with extremely low bias stability, meaning that bias errors become more stable over time. This stability is critical for high-precision applications such as drone navigation. And for higher-precision applications, such as drone navigation, antenna and weapon platform stabilization, tactical-grade IMU are required. Gyroscopes are known to operate with extremely low bias stability, meaning their bias errors remain relatively stable over time. This feature allows tactical-grade IMU to maintain excellent performance in long-term, high-precision applications. In addition, tactical-grade IMU are usually equipped with high-quality MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes to provide more accurate data output. It can be seen that navigation-grade IMU and tactical-grade IMU have different emphasis on accuracy, performance and application scenarios.
