M.Sc., PMP®, Sustainable Energy Expert, Certified Energy Manager, Certified Climate Change Expert " from UNFCCC ".
Today marks a significant milestone in the carbon markets ! Switzerland and Thailand have completed the first-ever Article 6.2 deal under the Paris Agreement, involving the transfer of 1,916 Internationally Transferable Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs). Article 6.2 allows nations to engage in cross-border exchanges of credits for greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The KliK Foundation purchased these ITMOs from Energy Absolute Public Co. Ltd. for the Bangkok E-Bus Program. The credits will help Switzerland meet its Paris Agreement targets, with Thailand adjusting its greenhouse gas inventory to avoid double counting. #carboncredits #carbonmarkets #unfccc #carbonmanagement #article6

#First ever #ITMOs for #NDC use! Through the issuance of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), #Switzerland and #Thailand are the first countries to successfully use the cooperative approach under the Paris Agreement to make significant progress in cooperative climate action. The KliK Foundation purchased the ITMOs from the Thai programme owner, Energy Absolute PCL (EA). The financial commitment of the KliK Foundation makes the conversion of the private bus fleet in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles financially viable. Forum on Trade, Environment & the SDGs (TESS) is pleased to release a policy brief on Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform: Options for Inclusive Collective Action at the World Trade Organization, by Peter Wooders. Underlining the vital importance of #FFSR to #climate action & achieving #Paris Agreement goals, the brief highlights: ➡ impacts of different types of fossil fuel subsidies ➡ consumer subsidies for transport and residential use as well as subsidies for producers of oil and gas as priority areas for reform. ➡ the need for a just transition & addressing particular challenges developing countries face in reforming fossil fuel subsidies ➡ the critical role that @WTO can play as a forum for collective action & cooperation on #FFSR Read here: https://bit.ly/4d4jpcN

The Kingdom of Tonga, along with the #6PAC+ coalition of Small Island Developing States (#SIDS) came prepared for battle at the Intersessional Working Group on GHG (ISWG GHG-17), raising its voice early to propose a crucial agenda revision. Tonga stressed the need for the integration of both technical and economic measures, in line with the Pacific and Caribbean SIDS proposals. Tonga, along with the 6PAC+ coalition is urging the International Maritime Organization to prioritize #ClimateAction in the shipping industry, including a universal carbon levy of US$150 per ton of CO2. The growing group is pushing for bold, equitable measures that ensure the climate most vulnerable states are supported in the global transition to sustainable shipping. Shipping is a global industry. And with the change in world order it is also an opportunity for the Global South to take the lead in producing and supplying the alternative fuels the industry needs: Ammonia, Biofuels, Hydrogen and Methanol. "The full decarbonization until 2050 has attracted much attention, however only a few attempts were made to include the Global South in the potential and actual projects gathering maritime community. One of the promising attempts is a joint US-Danish project to resource and execute pre-feasibility studies for green corridors in five countries in the Global South. One of them is the Chilean Green Corridors Network Project. The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping cooperates with the Chilean Government on establishing a network of green corridors allowing for green maritime transportation of goods in and out of Chile. The aim of the project is to establish green corridors between ports where vessels can access, and bunker low-carbon fuels." Aside from green corridors, we must be open to helping them develop production facilities. As many have vast potential for wind and solar energy, as well as the large agricultural population in many of those countries. One intiative for alternative fuel production taken in the Global South is the Haru Oni project located near Punta Arenas near Chile. Built at the start of the decade, it uses wind energy to capture CO2 and combine it with green hydrogen to produce various electrofuels. This in turn, can be used to supply vessels worldwide. The result would be a significant reduction In CO2 emissions in production and usage and new jobs created in Patagonia. Another idea would be working with farmers and their representative bodies to procure stubble and other agricultural waste as biofuel feedstock. This way farmers do not have to resort to burning stubble thereby reducing pollution, as well as giving them a year round source of income, and for shipping companies and fuel producers, a steady source of feedstock to make RNG and other biofuels for shipping. It also provides jobs in the local areas in procurement and production processes. The Global South is set to be the main driving force of the world economy. So how else can we encourage them to innovate in green shipping? Feel free to comment below. #Globalsouth #sustainableshipping #decarbonisation
By implementing the concept of green shipping corridors, countries in the Global South could be supplying much-needed #greenfuels to the developed countries of the Global North. #maritime #decarbonization #alternativefuels #energytransition Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping
