Solid urban leadership from the city of Warrnambool. As climate change accelerates urbanisation globally, this is the type of progressive leadership that will make the difference between sound local governance which effectively responds to needs and priorities of mixed urban populations, as opposed to councils that lag behind and are defensively trying to respond without pro-active strategies that involve migrants, refugees and internally displaced citizens.

The Global Refugee Forum (GRF), a quadrennial event and the main venue to drive and review progress toward the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees, took place last month in Geneva, Switzerland. RefugePoint and the Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative delegations played a leadership role at several of the events of this year’s GRF relating to refugee self-reliance, labor mobility, family reunification, and resettlement. Here are five key takeaways from last month's events: 1. There were over 1600 pledges presented at the Global Refugee Forum. Tracking the implementation of these commitments is improving, but remains unenforceable. 2. The largest multistakeholder pledge presented at the Global Refugee Forum was co-led by the Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative (which is housed within RefugePoint and co-founded with the Women’s Refugee Commission). 3. Family Reunification is a pathway that has been gaining momentum: The Multistakeholder Pledge on Family Reunification aims to reunite 1 million families by 2030. 4. Interest in expanding access to Labor Mobility Pathways continues to grow. 5. Inclusion of refugees and others with lived experience of forced displacement in the Global Refugee Forum has grown, but is still far from ideal. On June 20, the world observed World Refugee Day, a global event dedicated to honoring the resilience, courage, and strength of millions of refugees around the world. This year's theme, "Hope Away from Home," emphasizes the importance of creating supportive and inclusive environments for refugees as they rebuild their lives in new communities. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Suceava Coordination We are pleased to share insights from our recent Accommodation Coordination Meeting held in Suceava. This crucial gathering brought together over 20 participants from public institutions, NGOs, and other vital stakeholders dedicated to addressing the ongoing needs of refugees in our community. 🔹 Objective: With the possible closure of the governmental accommodation program, our focus has intensified on identifying sustainable and alternative accommodation options for those most vulnerable among the refugee population. This meeting was a pivotal step in our ongoing efforts to ensure no one is left without a safe place to call home. 🏠 🔹 Collaboration: The spirit of cooperation was palpable as representatives from various sectors worked together, sharing insights and proposing innovative solutions. It's through such collaborative efforts that we can make significant strides towards inclusive support for all. 🤝 🔹 Moving Forward: We discussed a range of potential accommodations and are actively working towards implementing these solutions promptly. Our goal is not only to meet immediate needs but also to foster a welcoming environment that supports the long-term well-being and integration of refugees into local communities. 🌍 We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the participants for their commitment and look forward to our continued partnership. Canada enhances commitments and collaborations at the Global Refugee Forum On December 15, 2023, Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), attended the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva, endorsing pledges for global refugee solutions. He announced $21 million for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to aid Afghan populations in Central Asia and Pakistan. This funding will help these countries assist the refugees. Canada plans to resettle over 136,000 refugees in the next three years, focusing on vulnerable groups like women, ethnic and religious minorities, LGBTQI+ communities, Rohingya refugees and human rights defenders. Canada is committed to expanding refugee labour and education pathways and co-sponsored the Securing Sustainable Futures mega-pledge for refugee education. Canada also funds the IOM to support Mexico in managing migration due to climate change.
