Most folks who work in group or team spaces are probably familiar with the practice of community agreements and use them often. (I do!) But just because many of us have or use community agreements doesn't mean they are always understood, appropriate, followed, or contribute to an equitable sharing of space. Thank you Kāvya Arpitha R. for capturing the discussion the decolonizing design group had on reimagining our own community agreements. I particularly love this consideration when you're holding space for shorter, one-off types of gatherings - "Being intentional about when agreements are needed (and when they aren’t): Depending on the purpose of a gathering and the composition of a group, agreements may not be needed. Instead, consider an activity that helps each individual connect with the purpose of the gathering by asking them to reflect and share: What do you need from this space? What can you contribute to this space? What are you willing to commit to in service of this gathering’s purpose? This approach may be particularly relevant for one-off gatherings as a mechanism for creating individual (and possibly collective) accountability."

Accessibility and inclusive design truly has the power to change the world. Universally designed playgrounds? More people living healthier lives. Accessible and adaptable homes? Less people needing to leave their home and community when needs naturally (or suddenly) change over time. Inclusive workplaces? Greater productivity, better work culture, and higher quality employees! The list goes on, and on, and on.

Inclusive design goes beyond accessibility to consider the psychological and emotional impacts that buildings and landscapes can have on people. I had the fortunate opportunity when I was studying Industrial Design to actually work for the Center for Universal Design and work with Ron Mace the founding member of CUD... it's been handed off to different faculty over the years and most recently shelved for a number of years. The Center for Universal Design (CUD) was established in 1989 to build upon the understanding of accessible design for people with disabilities. One of the most prolific deliverables from the CUD was the Seven Principles of Universal Design, a guiding framework for designing accessible, usable, and inclusive environments for all people regardless of ability, age, or status in life. Despite its lasting impact, the CUD has been inactive for more than a decade. (https://lnkd.in/ebbr52fH ) The College of Design at NC State has been issued a grant to reinvest in the CUD given increasing interest in related efforts such as inclusive design and building equity. This symposium intends to collaborate with like-minded peers and colleagues as we lay the foundational roadmap for the future of the CUD. The symposium will include a mix of informational panels and breakout sessions, during which we will address questions such as: > How do we incorporate emerging efforts related to inclusive design and building equity with traditional models of universal design? > Should future iterations of universal design aim to address race, gender, LGBTQ+ identity, as well as disability status and other personal identities? It is the duty of our project teams to design spaces that are accessible to, and usable by, as many people as possible. This idea manifests in all areas of expertise, especially on college campuses and within community centers. I'm challenging myself by using LinkedIn more (even when I don’t feel like an expert or anywhere close), sharing my thoughts, interests, and whatever else might come to mind in this very-soon-to-be PhD journey of mine. At the moment, I'm becoming increasingly intrigued by the concept of pluriversal design and its potential to redefine the future of universal design. I'm particularly curious about its implications for play among neurodivergent children and children who may struggle with different kinds of disabilities (or in any other way stand out from 'the norm'). What pluriversal design seems to offer is a alternative methodology to traditional approaches where the ultimate goal is often framed as inclusive design within a western and neurotypical context. However, this notion of inclusivity can inadvertently exclude marginalized voices, as it tends to normalize and “welcome” others into a one-fits-all framework that relies on neurotypical and western standards. Pluriversal design challenges this narrative by centering diverse experiences, cultures, and perspectives, thus creating spaces that truly embrace the multiplicity of human existence. I'm excited to delve deeper into this dynamic field, exploring how it can pave the way for more empowering and equitable environments for all. #PluriversalDesign #Neurodiversity #Accessibility #PhDJourney

Universal Design needs to be the new Green Building. This is a great short video about universal design. For those of us familiar with ADA design requirements, we know that for decades we've been mostly focused on one type of wheelchair user when we talk about designing for disabilities. This acknowledges how a design accommodation for one, might create a barrier for another. But, with creativity we can solve it. I also love that this mentioned not only physical disabilities but also developmental disabilities (often overlooked in the discussion). I'd love to hear creative solutions people have incorporated into their projects. Or, even challenges that you are still trying to solve.
