Harnessing the energy and innovation within someone and giving them the opportunity to develop and showcase that talent is crucial not only to cultivate creativity within an organization, but to prepare the next generation of leaders. I have the pleasure of working with some excellent young professionals at Dewberry. These relationships have taught me several lessons about mentorship, compelling me to share those takeaways with my network:
1. Looking for opportunities to present at industry events with a young professional can be a great way to exchange ideas with one another, while affording the mentor the ability to step back and give the spotlight to the young professional.
2. Finding opportunities to nominate them for awards, either for a project or for the individual, can be deeply gratifying for both parties.
3. Keeping close proximity to your younger staff is crucial, when possible, in developing a strong working rapport.
4. Being open to letting staff work on different projects, for different departments, or in other offices can help you keep their creative output at your organization, even if it doesn’t serve your immediate interests.
5. Sometimes tapping into their hobbies and interests can be hugely beneficial .
One example of such a relationship is my work with Staff Engineer/GIS Developer Michael H.. Starting initially with our water engineering team in Boston as an intern, Michael’s interest in GIS and asset management led him to contribute innovative solutions to our project work. One innovation leveraged GIS technology to proactively identify locations suitable for incorporating green infrastructure into communities that adhere to design and planning standards – a process that had previously been reactive and inefficient. Michael and I presented at the MassDOT Innovation Conference on this technology to great reception (pictured).
Similarly, a colleague was set to present at the National Utility Management Conference but found out he wasn’t able to attend. Michael stepped in with me to present on the topic of streamlining drinking water safety inspections through the use of data-driven GIS technology solutions.
My working relationship with Michael and other bright young professionals has taught me about building trust and cultivating talent. I hope some of these takeaways are helpful to my colleagues and network. As I continue on as Mid-Atlantic Growth Officer for Dewberry, I look forward to many more mentorship opportunities as I get to know more of the bright minds in Mid-Atlantic offices.
My question to you all: what mentorship success stories do you have to share?
