Academic prowess is shown through GPA and test scores, contextualized within the broader application. Admitted students also have deep engagement in specific interests, not spreading themselves too thin, and they demonstrate tangible impacts in their communities. In the race for Ivy League acceptance, the true essence of education can be overshadowed by the pressure to perform. Saying grades don’t count isn't the whole truth; they matter for school success and knowing your core concepts. But for a successful career, it's more about facing challenges and stepping out of your comfort zone than just grades. As an educator, I've observed that students who exhibit a love for learning and inherent personal traits such as pushing boundaries and having the courage to face failure, are often those who excel. It’s about stepping out of one’s comfort zone, not just curating a profile. Despite the increasing diversity on college campuses, inequities in graduation rates persist for students from historically marginalized backgrounds. The transfer process from community colleges to four-year institutions is fraught with challenges that often derail students’ dreams of earning a bachelor’s degree. Only 16% of students who start at a community college achieve this goal within six years, and the rates are even lower for low-income and minority students. As Aurely Garcia Tulloch and Tatiana Velasco Rodriguez from the Community College Research Center highlight, institutions that prioritize comprehensive, compassionate advising and create seamless transfer pathways are seeing better outcomes. The loss of credits during transfer and the lack of adequate support at four-year institutions are major barriers that must be addressed. It’s time for a new approach—one that includes comprehensive advising, stronger institutional collaboration, and a commitment to equity and inclusion in every step of the transfer process.
