High performance demands the ability to take risks. Risk takes various forms – speaking up, having hard conversations, making tough decisions, trying new things, giving a presentation in front of others, and the list goes on. They all push us out of our comfort zones. They present the danger of judgment by others. That can be painful and that’s not a metaphor. Our experience of feeling socially judged by others is processed in the same part of the brain as physical pain! People avoid difficult Last 8% Situations because they lead to tension, anxiety, and uncertainty, which causes pain. When I started exploring emotional intelligence and my Last 8% moments, I realized I was sometimes making decisions based on who was going to scream loudest if they didn't get their way. I didn’t always make the best decision. I made the easiest decision to avoid the pain.
