It’s Pride Month, and the celebration cannot just be a celebration because people are committing hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community daily. In my hometown, the rainbow crosswalk was vandalized with tire marks and spray paint. In the City of Poulsbo, Washington the downtown Pride flags were slashed. These acts are only a small sample of the violence committed against Gay and Trans people worldwide. Much of it is being delivered year-round in the form of anti-gay legislation in Congress. We are reminded this year that Pride is not just a celebration, but a perpetual battle for recognition, equality, and justice. We are also reminded that LGBTQ+ people still are not safe in their downtown neighborhoods, at their local nightclubs, or at work. Despite the hate, the Queer community is thriving. More people are out of the closet than ever, and the community is strong. The Bend rainbow crosswalk will be repainted, and the Poulsbo pride flags were sewn back together. Until the LGBTQ+ community has equal rights though, we have work to do. The ACLU is tracking all of the anti-LGBTQ legislation in the US: https://lnkd.in/gqs9m532 You can use this information to: - Call your state representatives and share your opinion - Inform your voting decisions in the upcoming election Are you in a state that has been impacted by anti-LGBTQ legislation? How "friendly" is the UK towards the LGBTQ+ community? According to a new ranking, not friendlier than Malta but still better than Russia. 🌈🫣 The UK continues to see its position plummet on ILGA-Europe’s annual Rainbow Map ranking how LGBTQ-friendly European countries are. 🌏📍 In 2015, the UK was ranked the best place in Europe for LGBTQ+ rights, with an 86% rating, but its 2024 ranking has seen it drop to 16th place, with an overall rating of just 51.87%. 📉 Read more below! ⬇️ #LGBTQ #UK #Europe

New resources - with a focus on LGBTQ+ topics in honor of #PrideMonth - are now available on The Lens, our hub for research & insights to support gender lens giving. 📈 Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy released the 2024 edition of the LGBTQ+ Index, a groundbreaking tool that measures charitable giving to U.S. organizations serving the LGBTQ+ community. This edition incorporates fresh data from 2020 and 2021 to offer a decade-long perspective on the sector. 🏳️🌈 The 2024 Social Media Safety Index from GLAAD provides an overview of the current state of LGBTQ social media safety, privacy, and expression, including sections on: the economy of hate and disinformation, predominant anti-LGBTQ tropes, policy best practices, suppression of LGBTQ content, the connections between online hate and offline harm, regulation and oversight, AI, data protection and privacy, and more. 🗣️ Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice's recent report "Mapping LGBTQI+ Activism in Central Asia & the South Caucasus" explores the diverse approaches employed by activists and groups involved in LGBTQI+ advocacy and community mobilization in the region. The findings emphasize the crucial role of LGBTQI+ organizing in the fight for liberation. Head to https://buff.ly/3wpQ0FM to dig in!

June is Pride month. Yesterday I read an article on the BBC News website about Rosario Lonegro who was forced to go through gay conversion therapy in Italy. “It was the darkest period of my life," he told the BBC. The story is difficult to read not least because we’re only talking about 2017; just 7 years ago. Rosario’s story can be found here: 'Darkest period of my life': Gay conversion therapy in Italy https://lnkd.in/eYgAUUMm It made me reflect upon the many joyful Pride celebrations taking place across the country and how much progress has been made and yet, as ever, how many barriers remain in place that still need to be taken down. From an employer perspective, there are so many ways to recognise, celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. My top 5 suggestions would include: 🤝 Fostering a workplace culture where discrimination and harassment of any kind will not be tolerated - if you see/hear something inappropriate call it out. Actively let people know they are safe and they are valued. Make sure policies are up-to-date, sufficiently robust and are understood 🗣️ Establishing resource groups, networks or committees who can provide information, support and advocacy. Higgs LLP has a terrific #ProudTogether group formed of LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies, they spearhead initiatives and help inform the firm’s approach. We also monitor and collect data at least annually to track progress and remain informed 📝 Using inclusive language in communications. Enabling people to add pronouns to their email signatures if they wish to and without judgment 🦺 Raising visibility and championing change by celebrating awareness days and ensuring LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies are referenced in brand material/on an organisation’s website (but not in a tokenistic way…) 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ Engaging with external groups (Birmingham Law Society has a brilliant new LGBTQ+ sub-committee, The Alliance Network (Midlands) is also great) and supporting LGBTQ+ causes and initiatives through sponsorship, fundraising and volunteer opportunities Start the conversation and then keep the conversation going. #Pride #PrideMonth #LGBT #ProudTogether #ThisIsHiggs #MondayMotivation #BeKind [📸 I love this quote - if anyone knows who said/wrote it first please drop me a line so I can thank and acknowledge them in this post.]

🌟 Champions of Change - The Spotlight Series! 🌟 June, it is a month we also know as #PrideMonth, which is dedicated to the uplifting of #LGBTQ+ voices, a celebration of LGBTQ+ culture and the support of LGBTQ+ rights.. Now firstly, I must say that I am a firm believer that everyday (not just a single day or month) we should be supporting minority groups and that is why this week, I want to shine the spotlight on Maurice Jongmans! Maurice, a man of many talents, he is an expert in online marketplaces, but today I want to highlight his impact which goes beyond his professional achievements. Maurice is a strong supporter of #diversityandinclusion and was an incredible sponsor at our European Women Payments Network (EWPN) event last year. He is also a very passionate advocate for gay rights and has been instrumental in the Zero Flags Project which promotes LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance. The Zero Flags project puts focus on the countries that criminalize homosexuality and they do so by putting the flags of these countries in the spotlight while carrying them in the yearly Pride Walk. 🌐 What is the message here? Maurice highlights the quote, "You cannot change the direction of the wind, but you can control the sails." For me, this is a powerful reminder for us all, a reminder that while we can't always control our circumstances, we can choose how we respond to them and choose the actions that we can take, including those which champion causes we are passionate about. ⭐ Call to Action: This week, let's all have a think about that ONE action can we take, an action that IS in our control, one that champions greater diversity and inclusion - what will yours be? If you want some ideas, feel free to check out this post I wrote or DM me directly! ➡ https://lnkd.in/dp7jFNT6 Join the revolution... #ChampionsOfChange #SpotlightRevolution #DEI #StrongerTogether Online Payment Platform Photo: A picture of Maurice and I, taken at the 2023 EWPN Annual conference in Vienna.

Last week, Hummingbird Speaks speaker Elizabeth Tomanguilla presented a talk on Allyship and what that looks like for the LGBTQ+ community specifically. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️⚧️ During her talk, Ellie discussed the current landscape in the United States for gender, expansive and transgender folks, as well as best practices that folks outside of that community can adopt in order to be an active ally. In the clip below, Ellie gives some perspective on the current legislation targeting the LGBTQ+ community. Over 500 anti-LGBT laws have been proposed this year alone, and out of those 80 have become law. If you’re an organization that wants to prioritize inclusivity, we have a curated bureau of talented speakers and facilitators who would love to share their expertise. Send us a message for more info: [email protected] #LGBTQ #HumanCentered #Allyship #GenderExpansive #Transgender [ID: A branded video with "Hummingbird Speaks" accross the top shows a map of the US with multiple sates highlighted in different colors and stats to show the current landscape for LGBT individuals. Three stats are written below the map: In 2023, 570 anti LGBT bills were submitted, and 70 became law. 1.6M folks are transgender, gender expansive or nonbinary in the US. 378 of Fortune 500 employees participated in the 23-24 CEI.]

🏳️⚧️ READ THE LETTER, SHARE THE GRAPHICS, GET THE MERCH if you believe trans youth deserve better than how they've been treated by the media, politicians, and school boards! Our Youth Voices wrote you a letter - because rather than talk ABOUT trans youth, it's time to hear FROM them! This letter is in response to the more than 600 bills that were proposed at the state and federal level last year targeting LGBTQ+ people. It’s written for Nex Benedict, a nonbinary teen who is gone too soon because school officials failed them. And it’s written for trans youth around the world who are just trying to live their lives. If you agree that trans and queer youth deserve better than how they've been treated, you can... 1️⃣ Download our "Trans Youth Deserve Better" graphics to post on your socials to spread the word, along with suggested language to share. 2️⃣ Save a copy of our Youth Voices' letter to send or e-mail to your local representatives! 3️⃣ Support our work with Trans Youth Deserve Better merch! Every dollar raised will fund our efforts to uplift the voices of trans youth — like the young people who signed this letter and in schools throughout the United States. During #PrideMonth, it's crucial to remember the trailblazers who fought for #LGBTQ+ equality. Here I explore the legacies of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, two transgender women of colour who played a pivotal role in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Why on #LinkedIn? It's not enough to claim to be allies; we need to face reality and stand up. Discussing LGBTQ+ rights and the ongoing fight against discrimination should align with a social media platform's values of promoting #DEI in the #workplace and beyond. And understanding the history and challenges faced by marginalised communities is essential for our personal AND professional growth. Read about Marsha and Sylvia's inspiring activism and the ongoing battle for transgender rights. #TransRights #Inclusion #Diversity #Equality #Workplace #HumanRights #SocialJustice #EmployeeEngagement #InclusiveWorkplace #ProfessionalDevelopment #ContinuousLearning
