"Over the decade 2012-2021, charitable giving to #LGBTQ+ organizations more than doubled...However, this still amounts to less than $1 out of every $500 donated going to support LGBTQ+ organizations." Interesting report here on trends over the last decade-plus, and a reminder that there is still much to do in advancing equity in #philanthropy.

Elements of the charitable sector appear to be suffering from long COVID, which impacts those infected for months and even years. New data from the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) shows executive and staff burnout top the list of issues. In a new report, “State Of Nonprofits 2024: What Funders Need To Know,” one-third of nonprofit leaders surveyed say that they are “very much” concerned about their own burnout (33%), and half report that they are more concerned about their burnout now than last year. LGBTQ+ identifying leaders reported moderately higher levels of concern about their own burnout than their non-LGBTQ+ identifying counterparts. https://lnkd.in/gx6E8D9r

Good things happening at THE JPB FOUNDATION, including increasing their giving by 20%. Foundations are required to pay out 5% of their assets; JPB will pay out 12%. “Philanthropy needs to be part of the chorus of voices that are speaking up for how essential multiracial democracy and its institutions and practices are,” Bhargava said. ... ""JPB’s focus will be on supporting groups that increase the political sway of people of color, LGBTQ people, and workers; fighting online misinformation; and making grants to faith-based institutions and other groups that work to get people with different backgrounds and beliefs to find common ground." ... "The foundation’s new grant-making programs are: Democracy, Gender, and Racial Justice; Community and Worker Power; Movement Infrastructure and Explorations; Faith, Bridging, and Belonging; and Reproductive Justice, Medical Research, and NYC Community Grants." https://lnkd.in/eJQTvCxz

The second annual LGBTQ+ Index, from Indiana University School of Education - Indianapolis is out. Some Key Takeaways: 🔹 LGBTQ+ organizations saw a 76% increase in assets from 2019-2021, concentrated in the largest organizations. 🔹 Charitable giving to #LGBTQ+ organizations has more than doubled over the past decade. Still, less than $1 out of $500 donated goes to support their efforts. 🔹 Growth varied across different types of LGBTQ+ organizations. 🔸 LGBTQ+ public-society benefit (such as grant-making organizations), education, and elders and aging organizations saw remarkable growth. 🔸 LGBTQ+ #HIV/AIDS organizations saw the lowest growth. 🔹 Diverging growth trends have led to an expanding community of LGBTQ+ organizations focused on a broader range of issues than a decade ago. This information is a valuable benchmark for nonprofit organizations within the sector. But, also good for development officers and nonprofit leaders to align their efforts. And, donors and funders to identify gaps in existing resources and get clear on the unique needs of LGBTQ+ organizations. #diversity #fundraising #nonprofits #philanthropy #foundations #research

Let's talk about the intersection of the arts, activism and philanthropy: • "Ongoing efforts to roll back social gains, such as reproductive and LGBTQ rights, have made one thing clear: Focusing on politics alone won’t create lasting social change.... Instead, what drives long-term shifts is culture — the public attitudes and narratives that underlie progress. That’s why some of the most effective social movements combine activism with art.... When artist-activists and community and labor organizers work together, they have the power to convert minds and hearts and transform societies." Read Ken Grossinger's opinion piece in 'The Chronicle of Philanthropy': https://lnkd.in/gaFkkGJA • "We know from the research that the arts and the humanities allow us to be more empathetic, to see the humanity in other people, to put ourselves in other people’s shoes, and to have more empathy. We cannot be a just nation if the citizenry lacks empathy, lacks the capacity to see the humanity in other people, especially people who don’t look like them or who may be of a different economic or social background." Read the interview with Ford Foundation president Darren Walker: https://lnkd.in/gM9QbupR • "The Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, a social impact funder at the intersection of music, public space, and community building, today announced it will spend down its $150M in assets over the next two decades and will close its doors in 2041." Today, on #TransgenderDayofVisibility, we honor the progress made towards ensuring that transgender community members can live in safety and dignity, and acknowledge the considerable work that remains on the path to equality. Last year, a record number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills limited the rights and freedoms of trans people in the U.S. and continue to pose a direct threat to their safety today. Just as each of us has a role to play in protecting trans community members, funders must commit to investing in organizations that defend their rights and livelihood. We recently joined Funders for LGBTQ Issues to deepen our understanding of this work. In this opinion piece, the collaborative's Executive Director, M. Saida Agostini Bostic, and Elizabeth Barajas-Román from Women's Funding Network offer funders a roadmap to supporting these organizations. They powerfully state: "These investments are more important than ever and should be replicated by women’s funds across the country—and all foundations that value equal rights and justice." Learn more about how funders can help create a world where trans people live safely, freely and authentically:
