I am thrilled to see MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving has provided support to so many wonderful organizations that are trying to reform the criminal legal system, reduce the use of incarceration, support children with incarcerated parents, help young people avoid justice-system involvement, and help those returning to their communities from incarceration. We know first-hand at the Center for Justice Innovation how a gift from Yield Giving can boost an organization’s impact and reach. No-strings-attached support makes a world of difference to innovative non-profits like Children of Promise, NYC and other grant recipients who are meeting important needs that no one was addressing before. The last paragraph of this Inside Philanthropy article says it all: “Scott deserves credit for understanding a reality that, as a society, we still haven’t learned: myopic ‘tough on crime’ measures and mass incarceration don’t reduce crime and are wildly expensive — as well as just plain cruel. … Investing in programs that work to prevent crime, reintegrate formerly incarcerated individuals who have served their time, and provide resources for those impacted by the criminal legal system are not only a more humane approach, but a far more effective one.” https://lnkd.in/eCQz4EFU

For Inside Philanthropy, this is a look the large geographic disparity in funding for #criminaljustice. Despite (or perhaps because of) their comparatively better incarceration rates, #NewYork and #California received roughly 50% of all #grantmaking commitments from 2018-2022. As a result, #funders may well be missing an opportunity to score some relatively easy wins in overlooked states where the situation is objectively worse. This piece is the result of a lot of input and teamwork. With thanks to Garance Franke-Ruta and Philip Rojc for their skillfull editing, and to Nick Turner, Marina Fisher, Angie Junck, Alexander Busansky, and Ana Zamora for their generosity with their time and expertise. #philanthropy #criminaljusticereform #cjreform #grants

As we know, without additional information or guidance, many coastal donors tend to fund locally or in geographies they are familiar with. Grateful to Inside Philanthropy for recognizing The Just Trust as one of the key organizations funding and partnering with criminal justice leaders in the South, one of the most under-resourced areas for philanthropy and investment in our issue area. This is how to develop solutions that can work in all 50 states and political contexts. Full article here: https://lnkd.in/g_ky4VKz

Walls Turned Sideways was officially incorporated July 26, 2024. They held their official board meeting September 5, 2024 and elected officers. The next steps are to complete state filings and apply for tax-exempt status, which we will be doing next week. Congrats, WTS! Walls Turned Sideways is an art and community space dedicated to people impacted by incarceration, with a focus on collective liberation, healing, and abolition. Walls Turned Sideways is an outgrowth of teaching and learning with incarcerated artists and writers at Stateville prison. The organization is a spinoff of the Prison + Neighborhood Art/Education Project. The organization seeks to more deeply engage the wider community of people impacted by incarceration: the family, friends, and loved ones of people who are currently incarcerated. Nonprofit Utopia is the ideal community for leaders who want to start, manage and scale nonprofits. This is achieved through an online community, consulting, coaching and courses.

Addressing the struggle for education and employment after incarceration requires a comprehensive approach that involves policy changes, community education, and support services. Recognizing the potential for rehabilitation and providing individuals with the tools to reintegrate into society can contribute to breaking the cycle of recidivism and fostering a more inclusive and just society. Analyst, Social Impact at EVO Advisors | Surveying Trends in Corporate and Traditional Philanthropy & Corporate Social Responsibility | RPCV
A connection on LinkedIn posted this article about the importance of public-private partnerships and it got me thinking about a new way for #csr to expand their outreach into communities. Because of the flexibility and agility of private funding, foundations and corporations are uniquely poised to help support the innovation that the government so desperately needs and isn’t always in the position to do, as risk should be averted when dealing with taxpayer money. It’s not just about giving money to the gov’t because they don’t have enough, it’s about combining the expertise from the private, public, and third sectors to come together to innovate. On a very small scale, private capital can develop pilot programs to support communities in areas of housing reform, etc…Several states have agencies that are actively looking for philanthropic and corporate partners. As I watch the popular CSR platforms adopt new volunteering approaches, I wonder if a new software module for exploring local public-private partnerships where corporations can join forces with the public and third sectors would be of any interest to companies. https://lnkd.in/deH-YbkQ #socialimpact #csr #corporatesocialresponsibility #charitablegiving #philanthropy Blackbaud Submittable Benevity Optimy Groundswell Bonterra

Believe it or not, life after incarceration can be more challenging than life behind bars. Everyone given a second chance should have access to the tools they need to make the most of it. This is why I've started volunteering with OPRC, a nonprofit dedicated to helping formerly incarcerated individuals successfully reintegrate into society. On Point Reentry Consortium (OPRC) offers a comprehensive support system that includes housing assistance, job training, employment opportunities, and mental health services. Their mission is to break the cycle of recidivism by providing the tools and resources necessary for a fresh start. Through mentorship, advocacy, and community support, OPRC provides individuals with the extra backing to rebuild their lives, restore their dignity, and contribute positively to their communities. If this cause is something you care about, too, please follow On Point Reentry Consortium (OPRC) and support this critical cause. Let's work together to create a more inclusive and compassionate society. 🙌 #SecondChances #ReEntry #CriminalJusticeReform #NonProfits #incarceration

As individuals emerge from the shadows of their past, they become beacons of hope and inspiration for others – proof that no obstacle is insurmountable, and that the human spirit is capable of transcending even the darkest of circumstances. Their stories serve as a powerful reminder of the inherent potential for growth and renewal that resides within each of us. In the end, the journey from incarceration to inspiration is a testament to the transformative power of resilience, perseverance, and the unwavering belief in the possibility of redemption. It is a journey that transcends the confines of the prison walls and serves as a beacon of hope for all who dare to dream of a brighter tomorrow. Here's your chance to win $500. The year 2024 will mark 60 years since the birth of Community Action! To commemorate this important milestone, the National Community Action Partnership (NCAP) is sponsoring a poster contest. Open to Community Action staff, board, volunteers, and their family members, the contest challenges competitors to visually demonstrate the important role of Community Action in fighting the conditions of poverty—whether the focus is on our historic accomplishments or on our future challenges and opportunities. Entrants may use the promise of community action as inspiration, recognizing the past but looking to the future and inspiring hope. Grand prize winners will be selected in each of two categories of focus: Historic: This category will honor the past and recognize 60 years of fulfilling the Promise of Community Action. Future: This category will look ahead to leverage our past so that we remain strong to meet the needs of the future. The winner in each category will be awarded $500 and design credit. Grand prize–winning entrants’ artwork will be incorporated into posters made available across all 1,000 Community Action Agencies (CAAs) and used by NCAP at its trainings and annual conference.
