🌈 Under Threat: LGBTQ+ Rights Right Now Over 500 bills targeting LGBTQ+ rights were proposed in 2023, leading to devastating consequences for transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) communities. It's time for the philanthropic sector to act with precision and strategy to support intersectional movement building and protect democracy, equity, and health. As we approach the 2024 presidential elections, there is a growing fear that these attacks will only intensify. This is a critical moment for the philanthropic sector to act with precision and strategy. We must invest in intersectional movement building and support initiatives that promote democracy, reproductive justice, racial equity, climate change, and health. Our movements have the knowledge and experience to win and build a world where everyone is safe, well, and free. Funders for LGBTQ+ Issues and our member network offer resources for foundations to focus on TGNC communities in their grantmaking. 📖 Read the full article by Saida Agostini-Bostic from the Center for Effective Philanthropy: https://lnkd.in/eDh3g9zT #LGBTQRights #Philanthropy #GivingCompass #TGNC #IntersectionalMovements #SocialChange #TheCenterForEffectivePhilanthropy

As National Delegate representing Maine at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and someone who identifies as LGBTQ+ and Asian American, I look forward to joining fellow Democrats to kickstart the momentum to re-elect President Biden and flip the U.S. House in November! But I need your help to get to the convention. You can chip in here: https://gofund.me/c8a3a5d6 What's at stake in this election cannot be more stark: Will we vote to safeguard our democracy, or will we let it slip once again toward demagoguery and despotism? Will we elect a President and Democratic majority that checks and balances a conservative Supreme Court, or will we let Trump appointees further erode hard-won progress on reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights? The choice is crystal clear: We need to keep Democrats in control of the White House and Senate and flip the U.S. House. That is why I threw my hat into the ring to run for a National Delegate seat. I strongly believe that Millennials and young people, especially LGBTQ+ voters and voters of color, cannot and must not sit out of this election. Hopelessness is NOT an option. The estimated cost, including hotel, transportation, and airfare, is upwards of $5,000. Any help with the cost is greatly appreciated. As the leader of a small community-based nonprofit and local author, it means a lot! This is an exciting opportunity and a crucial time for our democracy and I ask for your support so I can represent Maine at the National Convention. If you can chip in $25, $50, $100 or more, it will go a long ways! Thank you! Marpheen #Democrats #DNC https://lnkd.in/euVS5VNT

The Alliance has called on all Realtor® Political Action Committees (RPACs) to utilize our proposed “Article 10 Rule” and refrain from endorsing and funding elected officials and candidates who openly engage in discriminatory behavior against the LGBTQ+ community even if they are deemed “pro-housing.” The Alliance has unveiled a new tool that tracks RPACs and their support of those who are openly discriminatory against the LGBTQ+ community. Over the last six years, which covers all the most recent elections, RPACs around the nation have combined to award approximately $3.3 million to those who have taken the lead in anti-LGBTQ+ political activity. RPACs have also funded 322 politicians who have sponsored anti-LGBTQ+ bills already in 2024 led by Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Missouri RPACs funded legislators in these states have, respectively, introduced 46, 29, and 25, anti-LGBTQ+ bills this year alone. https://lnkd.in/e5BsgBpc

Beyond Allies: Seeking Accomplices in a World Quick to Abandon In a revealing moment for LGBTQ+ advocacy, Senators Ben Casey and John Fetterman withdrew their support for the William Way LGBT Community Center's federal grant, succumbing to the pressures of an online campaign led by conservative influencer, Libs of TikTok. This incident is a stark reminder of the fragile nature of political allyship within our current landscape, highlighting a critical distinction between allies and accomplices in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. True allyship should not waver in the face of controversy or political convenience. However, the swift retraction by these senators, driven by fear of backlash, underscores a deeper issue: the readiness of some political figures to abandon LGBTQ+ initiatives when faced with opposition. This not only undermines the progress towards equity and inclusion but also sends a troubling message to the LGBTQ+ community—that their rights are negotiable, and their well-being is secondary to political survival. We must demand more than fair-weather friends. Our fight for equality needs accomplices committed to justice, unswayed by the ebb and flow of public opinion or online vitriol. The journey towards a more inclusive society needs steadfast support, not just in moments of convenience but especially in the face of adversity. Let this serve as a call to action: to elevate our standards for allyship, to seek out true accomplices, and to continue our advocacy with resilience and determination. The path to equality is fraught with challenges, but with unwavering support and collective effort, we can forge a future where LGBTQ+ rights are unequivocally upheld. https://lnkd.in/eaaFV9vS

Sobering chapter in CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation #SOSC2024 Report on #Gender - Resistance Against Regression In the face of regression, women’s and LGBTQI+ movements have continued to claim rights in 2023. But civil society’s hard-won, decades-long trend of progress in women’s and LGBTQI+ rights has slowed down in the face of an intense anti-rights backlash. In many countries, as backlash is being instrumentalised for political gain, attacks on activists are growing. Across the world, civil society resisted – through street protest, advocacy, campaigning, solidarity, mutual support and litigation. https://lnkd.in/esvc42fq #civilsociety #conflict #governance #climate #democracy

The Transvox podcast has dropped - This week, something of a rant, Gillian and Jenny discuss concerns about proposed changes to the NHS constitution and their potential impact on the transgender community, as well as strategies to promote trans rights and increase visibility. They also examine the actions of organisations in response to changing public attitudes towards the LGBT community, the challenges of the current political climate, and the impact of the far-right's rise in Germany. Lastly, they address the importance of mobilising to counter what they see as a misguided decisions. They highlight the importance of leveraging their presence on social media platforms, enlisting allies, and engaging with the Labour Party for political representation and support. They emphasise the need for allies to be more active and vocal in advocating for these communities and discussed the negative effects of anti-woke ideologies. Jenny argues that while some companies may be using rainbow washing tactics for cynical reasons, the fact they are doing so at all indicates a shift towards more positive attitudes towards the community. The conversation underscores the importance of social movements in driving change and the need for strategic campaigning to overcome opposition and maintain progress. Gillian suggests strategies for influencing allies and suggests that Jenny reach out to local bodies and MPs to voice their concerns. Hope you enjoy and find this useful. Today we got the news and sent this email to our RMEQ email list, thought I would share it here: Freedom is on the ballot this November, and its letter is J. I’m proud of all the ways Coloradans have fought for LGBTQ+ rights. At Rocky Mountain Equality, we couldn’t do this work without you. Will you join us this November to ensure LGBTQ+ people’s right to marry remains protected in Colorado? You might think: “Why do we need to worry about protecting same-sex marriage if it’s legal in the United States?” Let’s break it down. The Supreme Court ruling that protects same-sex marriage at the federal level isn’t guaranteed forever. Recently, the Supreme Court has reversed many long-standing protections—from abortion access to voting rights. We can’t rely on politicized courts alone. We need to ensure our rights are protected at the state level. And right now , they are not. Over 15 years ago, Colorado’s state constitution was changed to say: “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state.” It’s time to remove this outdated ban on same-sex marriage from our state constitution, and you can this November by voting YES on J on your ballot. Voting YES on Ballot Initiative J is standing up for the freedom and rights for all Coloradans. Every couple in Colorado deserves the freedom to marry. No matter what courts throw at us or what extreme politicians might say, Coloradans deserve a constitution that is reflective of our diverse, vibrant community. It’s up to us to say there’s no place for anti-LGBTQ+ extremism in Colorado. If the Court decides to attack our rights, we trust that Colorado will stand strong and protect them. Together, by taking action on November 5, we can protect LGBTQ+ rights for generations to come, and make history – again. Vote YES on J and show that hate has no place in Colorado. In solidarity, Mardi Moore

Did you know less than $1 out of every $500 in charitable giving goes to LGBTQIA+ organizations despite our community facing unprecedented attacks? Breaking that down even further, only 4 cents of every $100 goes to TGNC communities. Did you also know that, of the youth The Equality Crew serves, ~70% are TGNC? This is why it is critical for you to support organizations in your area doing the daily work of supporting our LGBTQIA+ communities. One way you can do that is by going to https://lnkd.in/gQCNj-BC and supporting our work to create welcoming and inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ youth in Northwest Arkansas.
How can philanthropy support LGBTQ communities? Last fall, ahead of a CEP conference session on the subject, M.
