"Solutions to inequality cannot happen without addressing ableism. Unless there is an increase in intentional, transparent anti-ableist practices from the sector, philanthropy’s aims to resource cross-movement work, minimize inequality for marginalized communities, and move equity forward will remain unfulfilled." Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and we renew our commitment to disability justice and call on our peers to continue to dismantle and root out ableism in the philanthropy sector. Ableism is a system of oppression that devalues and discriminates against people with disabilities. This article by Sandy Ho and Jen Bokoff, published last year in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, provides seven ideas for philanthropy to consider: 1. Remember that ableism doesn't exist in a vacuum. 2. Hire, support, and promote disabled talent. 3. Ensure that your grantmaking processes and technologies are accessible. 4. Be in active partnership with disability communities. 5. Build data about disability. 6. Proactively support disabled-led initiatives and organizations. 7. Call peers and stakeholders into learning and constant improvement. PEAK Grantmaking signed on to Disability & Philanthropy Forum’s pledge knowing that we had much work to do. The commitment has been transformative for our team, and for me personally, and my hope is that sharing the story of our journey in the Forum’s annual report will help inspire more organizations to prioritize and advocate for disability inclusion and justice. In the report, I shared four key steps that PEAK took over the past two years to progress in our journey: *We started with learning* Creating a staff learning plan is essential to building understanding, alignment, and team-wide ownership in implementing accessibility inclusion. Dedicate time and space for both self-directed and group learning experiences to better understand the perspectives and experiences of people with disabilities and the scope of disability-inclusive practices. *We created a road map* We developed an action plan to guide our work and track progress across the Forum’s eight action areas. Work collaboratively to identify and seize opportunities to improve accessibility. *We traveled together* Making progress depends on making this work an organization-wide commitment. Be mindful that we are each at a different point in our own disability-inclusion learning journey. *We paused to reflect* Take the time to celebrate progress, share challenges, and recognize where you have work to do. *We got to know the disability community along the way* Taking to heart the principle of “nothing about us without us,” we knew that fostering relationships with disability advocates in the sector would be central to our growth as an organization. 🔊 New on the Podcast - we’re discussing why it’s critical to include disability across all philanthropy and grantmaking. Disability is innately connected to every social issue, but for some reason disability is often deemed as “separate” from issue-specific philanthropy, such as supporting education, climate, economic mobility, or health equity. This exclusion of disability from the wide spectrum of grantmaking has its own reverse multiplier effect. Instead of scaling change to reduce inequity and create the conditions for more people to thrive, excluding disability means that change only addresses a subset of people while overlooking communities deeply affected by systemic inequity. For example, any funder wishing to end income inequality and support economic mobility in America will find it challenging to achieve their goals if they are not factoring in the impact of the subminimum wage as well as current policies that prevent disabled Americans from wealth-building, including getting or staying married. Embedding disability into the fight to end poverty can shift a funder’s strategy from "some population change" to "true population-wide change." In this new podcast episode, we talk with a group of philanthropic leaders who are each dedicated to advancing disability justice. Yet, these funders’ 8,605 disability-related grants totaling $755.1 million represented just 2% of the $37.2 billion in total giving reported by the Foundation 1000."
