how to do work with compassion
Deputy Vice Chancellor at Buckinghamshire New University | Higher Education Leadership. All views my own
Over the last week, I’ve chaired our promotion panels at Buckinghamshire New University. In many ways, it’s the most important meeting that we hold in universities. Not only do colleagues spend a great deal of time preparing, these panels pass judgement on careers, on achievements, on successes, on educational lives that demand so much. What stood out, what I’ve never experienced at other universities, is the seriousness, the gravity, with which we considered individual circumstances. We considered caring responsibilities, parenthood, illness, myriad other contexts that interrupted careers, with care, with compassion and with an understanding rare in the metric-heavy world of higher education. Most importantly, we attached *weight* to life-circumstances, counter to the normative patterns that reproduce normative promotions. All work histories are not the same. All lives are not the same. All interactions and intersections and interrelations between life and work are not the same. When we make these judgements, about careers, about promotions, about salaries, we need to remember that.

So let’s be real: today is a perfect reminder that sometimes we need a break from meetings about scheduling meetings. Here’s to a day where you can put your feet up and silence the relentless questions about student enrollment stats and immerse yourself in the simple pleasure of barbecue’s smoky embrace.

The boundaries between segments hold tremendous potential, especially for both academic and CTE dual enrollment. Allowing this to be managed and tracked at the level of students and families, and schools and colleges is critical. However, without adequate software or personal technology these type of strategic and accessible dual enrollment options and pathways are only available to a tiny fraction of the school population and have to managed with adequate human resourcing, which is difficult in budget constrained times.
As I reflect on the wild ride that is ASU-GSV, I'm energized by the fact that "skills," "pathways," and "degrees" were mentioned together throughout the summit. To me, that signals that there is a growing commitment to delivering real value for students via strong pathways from education to career. We know that dual enrollment is often an important component of those pathways—that's why I'm excited to share our team's new learning deck. Check it out to learn about the history of dual enrollment, our hypothesis about what great dual enrollment programs look like, and the levers we have to make all dual enrollment programs great ones. Shoutout to Career Ladders Project, the Community College Research Center, and the Public Policy Institute of California for their partnership—as well as Bill Tucker and Sylvia Symonds, Ph.D. for their synthesis. https://lnkd.in/ddRxupij

I sat down with the FDU Florham Student Government Association earlier this year. An enjoyable experience, as always! As universities, we often talk about improving the "student experience." But what does that really mean? Students have real, tangible, and practical ideas that can make a difference. You just need to give them a platform to share them with you without fear. We can have great programs and fantastic faculty, but... is that all there is to a great university or college experience? What about the little things? The day-to-day things that can make or break a student's time on campus? I left that meeting feeling challenged and so inspired. Higher education is more than classes and grades; it's about growth, preparation for the future, and building a foundation for success. What do you think makes for an amazing university experience? What did you wish you had in college that would have set you up better for your career?

Canton High School has been recognized as an AP Honor Roll School! The College Board has recognized Canton High School as an Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Roll School. AP courses offer high school students high-level classes that can qualify them for college credit or advanced placement once they begin college. CHS was recognized with a Bronze Level Award as well as an Access Award. To earn the Bronze Award, at least 40 percent of the school’s graduating class must have taken at least one AP exam during high school with at least 25 percent scoring a three or higher on at least one of those exams. In addition, at least 2 percent of the graduating class must have taken five or more exams, and one of those had to have been taken while they were freshman or sophomores. According to the College Board, this is to ensure that the AP experience is being spread across their high school career, rather than making students feel a disproportionate amount of pressure in any school year. #CantonBulldogs
