“Which company do you wish you could have invested in?” 🪄 I've long answered Wiz. Wiz is one of the fastest growing software companies of all time… it's hard to believe that they’ve only been in market since 2020 The cybersecurity juggernaut has just announced a massive $1B raise, with a16z, Lightspeed, and Thrive Capital valuing the business at $12B. Any case study on their success wouldn't be able to do justice to the sheer scale of their growth - reaching $350M ARR in just four years. The demand for comprehensive cloud and SaaS security solutions and expertise is growing, with 83% of organisations planning to increase their cloud security budget in the next 12 months alone. But I think what Wiz has managed to do within the market is particularly commendable. Despite top-down pressure to improve cloud security posture, cybersecurity startups will often be met with apprehension from security teams who are reluctant to provide access to their code base or internal data. In starting out as an agentless security product, Wiz was able to increase the speed of their distribution and massively shortcut their time to value. 🤔 What will their raise go towards? It's likely this $1B will be used at least in part for inorganic growth - the company recently acquired Gem Security and signed an LOI for Lacework before the discussions were reported to have fallen over last week. As a16z calls out in their investment notes, Wiz is moving towards building an end-to-end platform for security, and I'm excited to see how they tackle the next big security challenge: AI cloud.

Ad revenue is about to take a massive hit from AI. It was only a matter of time - and Google is now taking notice. By acquiring WIZ, they’re showing they understand: if you’re not flexible you will lose. Why? Google understands that ad revenue is about to take a huge hit thanks to the introduction of AI.  Instead of just showing you tons of websites among a lot of ads, AI gives you the answer you’re looking for, front and center.  New AI search engines will be challenging them soon, and Google needs to make changes in order to stay relevant. So, they’re shifting towards cloud security. The same goes for AppSec. If you’re not taking this approach to your AppSec program, well, best of luck.  Because AI is transforming the security landscape, too. For AppSec, it's more about the veracity of attacks that are coming your way. So, how should you prepare yourself? Don't put your eggs all in the same basket (like the Google of the past).  This is risky!  Be like the new Google, diversify your security offerings.  Stay on top of the new trends in security.  If you do that, you have a better chance of avoiding a breach or data loss. Z Venture Capital invests in QueryPie, CHEQUER Inc. CHEQUER, a US based Y Combinator alumni (YC W20), operates ‘QueryPie’, a centralized Cloud Data Protection Platform (CDPP) that enables data access and privacy control for enterprises in a single platform. It supports integrated management of data access control, auditing, and monitoring tasks in cloud environments, allowing for easier and safer data security management. While it is mainly offered as a SaaS solution, on-premise as well as hybrid solutions are also available. Google announced this week that they are looking to acquire Wiz, a cloud security leader, for an eye-watering $23 Billion pricetag. This would be Google's largest acquisition ever, with a pricetag that comes out to roughly 65x Wiz's 2023 revenue of about $350 million. https://lnkd.in/gSAREBJ6 Wiz has been in security acquisition news centered on their rocky negotiations to acquire Lacework, which is now likely to be acquired by Fortinet. Earlier, Cisco acquired Splunk, a major SEIM provider, and numerous smaller deals by major players are common news this year. So why all the acquisitions in the security space (particularly cloud) now? Some of it is simple economics- venture funding and debt funding pools have been shrunk by higher interest rates, shortening startup runway and making the end goal of an IPO a riskier path forward as customers facing similar pressures tighten their belts and become more conservative. Large organizations like Google are less reliant on these forms of funding, as they have large recurring revenues that can weather inflation with price hikes, making them comparatively cash-flush and able to buy solutions that aren't profitable yet with the goal of integrating them into their portfolio. Another reason is the technological shift to platform solutions in the cloud. Cloud adoption often comes with an explosion of solutions needed to build, run, manage and secure workloads, which companies like Wiz and Lacework were at the forefront of building in a relatively greenfield space. Cloud Security has become a major focus for organizations as it becomes the predominant home for workloads, and Cloud breaches are front-page news. Google, while a leader in ZTNA and with a strong email security product, doesn't have a security platform in the same way Microsoft does, and is likely seeing opportunity by integrating Wiz into GCP- possibly as a way to position GCP as "the security cloud" and giving them at-bats as a really compelling multi-cloud play to win business at Azure/AWS customers? Regardless, expect to see more consolidation in coming years as the startup winners of the "free money" era are identified, picked up, integrated and commoditized by large orgs with money to spend and customers asking about augmenting platforms with emerging capabilities.
