It can kind of be seen as the same as governments mandating reporting - something I’m seeing in my day-to-day work with climate action in the built environment. SFDR, CSRD, ISSB, TCFD, OECD, UNGP. If your brain automatically goes into Wordle, Scrabble, or other quiz-related-solving mode, this post probably isn't for you. If however, you feel a growing sense of unease, pain, or anguish, you are amongst the sick group of sustainability professionals trying to unscramble these frameworks. We have attempted to find the common denominator when it comes to climate action for all of the above and more. So if you need to address some or all of these and are struggling, firstly: don't do it one by one, but rather find out where the overlaps are and do what needs to be done in a sensible order then pull out the points that need to be reported depending on your business and sector. Secondly: think about what you need to do or say in order to convince your boss that this is worth spending the time on. How can you extract more value than just making this a tick box exercise? (Spoiler alert this will be focus for next article) I'm curious if there is some venn diagram intercept between people working with climate regulation and interest in anagrams.

Political will and strong leadership at the core of climate action Political will is gaining wide recognition as the engine for driving meaningful change in the fight against climate change given that government policies which encompass bills, regulations, standards and incentives largely dictate climate ambitions and therefore the trajectory of greenhouse gas emissions. It has also been reported that 50-80% of the actions needed for the implementation of climate plans occur at sub-national levels. Given the urgency of addressing climate change, awareness should be raised at high level such that political actors become powerful catalysts for stronger, cohesive and collaborative climate actions at global level. The coupling of national climate plans with economic growth could be one of the means for encouraging these political leaders to take bold climate actions.

An interesting read from Andrew Winston, in which he boils down the case for companies to address Climate action into three categories: need to (“we’re all going to die”), have to (“your stakeholders and the law demand it”), and want to (“you’ll be richer and happier”). 

Want to understand the motivations for corporate climate commitments? The State of Corporate Climate Commitment report shows that motivations for climate action are complex and varied, but companies want to get climate action right. 81% of companies identified three or more factors, including competitive necessity, regulation, and voluntary reporting, as motivators for climate action. 77% of corporate leaders said they would address any backlash by investing more in their climate strategy to make sure everything is planned correctly. These encouraging findings emphasize that corporations understand the many business reasons to act on climate mitigation now.
