🚨 Exciting Milestone in Climate Action: the first-ever EU regulation to reduce #methane emissions has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union and will enter into force 20 days later. This significant step in the global effort to reduce methane emissions sets strict new curbs on emissions from #FossilFuel operations across EU Member States. Tough standards will also apply to imports from the many oil, coal and natural gas exporters that supply to the EU. Flavia Sollazzo, Senior Director of EU Energy Transition at EDF Europe welcomed the occasion, but cautioned "the regulation's success hinges entirely on rigorous implementation. The real work starts now: Holding the industry accountable is crucial, and we expect Member States to act swiftly." Helen Spence-Jackson, Executive Director at EDF Europe, emphasised the role of emission data transparency in holding emitters to account: "With advanced monitoring, measuring, and tracking technologies like MethaneSAT now available, policymakers and industry have powerful tools at their disposal. This radical level of transparency eliminates excuses and demands immediate action." We will continue to collaborate with lawmakers and industry to ensure accountability. With a lot of heated debate on the future of oil and gas production in the UK and its impacts on energy security, consumer costs and climate action, worth revisiting the Climate Change Committee advice on some of this back in 2022 (https://lnkd.in/ebCPGC6m). 'The prices paid for fossil fuels by UK consumers are determined by international markets. The best approach to reducing consumers’ exposure to fossil fuel prices is to make systematic efforts to reduce UK demand for fossil fuels' 'At present, UK production has an emissions footprint that is lower than the current average for international extraction, by 14% for fossil gas and by 3% for oil. However, extra gas and oil production could lead to higher overall global consumption. The evidence on the size of each of these effects is not conclusive, and it is therefore not possible to conclude with confidence the net effect of new North Sea production on global emissions.' 'UK’s net imports of oil and gas are expected to fall if consumption falls in line with the Committee’s Net Zero pathway or the Government’s, and production follows the OGA projection. CCC pathways see oil consumption fall by 46-62% by 2035 and 84-98% by 2050 from today. Unabated consumption of fossil gas (i.e. use without CCS) in CCC scenarios falls by around 65% by 2035 and is virtually eliminated by 2050'

In the ongoing discourse between Federal Labor and Liberal parties surrounding Australia's commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement and the pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, a critical analysis of both political and environmental strategies is essential. The Paris Climate Agreement, primarily crafted by politicians from nations that are not major fossil fuel exporters, predominantly focuses on reducing local emissions. This localised approach, however, does not account for the broader implications on global emissions. A troubling consequence of this approach is the temptation for countries to shut down local emitters and switch to importing goods and energy. This tactic creates an illusion of progress while undermining genuine global emission reductions. Europe’s energy strategy exemplifies this issue. The continent significantly curtailed local gas exploration, opting instead to import gas from Russia, and more recently, from U.S. shale and Qatar LNG. Closer to home, New South Wales and Victoria have also restricted local gas exploration, relying on imports from other states and planning new LNG import terminals to accommodate these imports. This strategy highlights the same flawed logic of exporting emissions rather than addressing them. The fundamental question remains: how do we prevent politicians from achieving net-zero targets by exporting emissions and potentially harming our economy?
