A-36 Apache was the ground attack/dive bomber version of the P-51 Mustang. This photo shows the difference! It had rectangular, slatted dive brakes so it could release bombs at low speeds. SOP was to cut the throttle about 12,000 feet, dive straight down to Vne 390 mph, drop bombs between 2 and 4,000 feet, stow the brakes, full throttle on the liquid cooled V-12 Allison, and head for the clouds. My ears hurt just thinking about the altitude changes in such a short amount of time, and I wonder what the G load was during the transition... By attaching up to eight solid fuel JATO rockets, each C-130 gains an additional 8,000 lbs of thrust, significantly reducing takeoff distances. This enhancement is particularly valuable in environments with limited runway space. Unfortunately, C-130 has seen a shift in its reliance on JATO capability. Modern advancements in engine design and a lack of production stock have led to a significant reduction in JATO usage, as newer engines provide ample thrust for standard operations. Despite this evolution, JATO remains in use for specific, demanding conditions, particularly in polar regions. The LC-130 "Skibirds," used for Antarctic resupply missions, still employ JATO to escape icy runways from time to time. Notably, JATO's role in the Blue Angels' C-130 demonstrations, a crowd favorite until 2009, ceased due to depleted Vietnam-era JATO stock.
